I have been struggling with my WHS 2003 (Acer EasyStore 340) for about a month.  It stated prompting me with port forwarding errors (DIR 655 router) a while back signaling that I would not be able to access my WHS via the internet. I ignored the prompts for some time as  was not actually using the internet connectivity to my WHS.

I then added a D-Link DGS-1008G 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch to the DIR 655 Router as I ran out of LAN ports when I added my HTPC to my devices.

Then my WHS started disconnecting from my home network.  I could not remote into it wirelessly (via latop) using Remote Connection in Windows 7 nor could I access is via the drives I had mapped to it via my HTPC (wired connection to same router).

I only know there is an issue when the server disconnects. As it does not have a dedicated keyboard or monitor I can only see the desktop when I remote into it wirelessly from my laptop.  When it disconnects I can see the WHS icon in my tray go from Green to Black.  And when I try to remote in, I get errors saying the WHS cannot be found.

I started to think that maybe it was my DIR 655 Router.  I did the following with no success:

- Changed LAN ports
- Changed network cables
- Upgraded the firmware to 1.35NA
- Reset to factory settings
- performed 30-30-30 reset
- physically forwarded ports for WHS (80/40/4125)

Given that I cannot solve the connection problem with the above router fixes, am I to conclude that the issue is with my WHS?

Thanks

Is the Acer and other wired connected devices connected to the switch? This is preferred.
Are the Acer network adapter drivers up to date?

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

All wired computers are going into the switch.  When I go to the Device Drivers in the Contorl Panel, and to the LAN card, it does not appear that the drivers need updating. I believe I am in N mode but need to confirm.  Need to confirm security will get back to you no this.  All computers have fixed IP addresses.

I can ping WHS and all Clients (one wired the other wireless) from each other when WHS connectivity is working.  When it fails, I can still ping clients from each other but I cannot ping WHS.  My internet access does not cut out on the Clients when the WHS disconnects.

Thanks

Would think that the WHS is the root cause here possibly.

-Security is WPA/WPA2 - Personal
-Advanced DNS is OFF
-DNS relay is ON
-Using Fixed IP Addressess for everything
- Firewall as originally set to Address Restricted for UDP and Port and Addressed Restricted for TCP.  Have changed to Endpoint Independent for both UDP and TCP
- Need clarity on the QoS options.  Do I disable QoS Engine,Automatic Classification, and Dynamic Fragmentation?

PROBLEM:
As noted, my WHS is disconnecting from my network.  When it does so, the lights on my WHS stay on but I cannot access it via my clients

I have two clients:
1) laptop (wireless) - access to shared folders on WHS, and I remote in from this computer
2) HTPC physically connected to the router, and I have mapped drives on my HTPC to certain folders on my HTPC

When I lose the wireless connectivivty to my WHS on my laptop, I still retain internet on the laptop.  At the same time my mapped drives on my HTPC become unaccessable but I still have internet access on the HTPC.

What I noticed tonight is that my Homegroup is still working.  That is, my HTPC (Windows 7 Professional) allows me to share files across my clients.  As such, I share all my files on my laptop (Windows Home Premium) with my HTPC.  So when the WHS connectivity stops working with my clients, I still retain sharing across the Homegroup.

So this would support the point that the issue is likely not the router as it does seem to be providing internet and sharing across my Homegroup.

I am also see some errors in my Event Viewer as well.  I have been assuming that the issue may be my WHS (Network Interface Card) but it is not giving me any errors.  It is a Gigabit (10/100/1000) Marvell Yukon 88E8071.  The driver is 11.23.2.3 (Dated 11/12/2009).  I am looking to see if it has a driver update.  Was on the Marvel site but am not sure just yet.

However I am aslo noticing that my Event Viewer in my WHS stops logging events when my server disconnects from my network.  However my server looks like its on. Note it is a headless server so you cannot actually see what is going on unless you succesfully remote into it.  Which I cannot do if it disconnects.

So based on this, I am assuming that the DIR-655 router may not actually be the issue.

Happy to hear your thoughts.

Yes turning off QoS options might help however might be best to contact the Mfr for this unit. If the other devices are maintaining connection then this unit could be an issue.
One thing you can try would be to add a 2nd NIC and see if it exhibits the same issue.

Just checked the Event Viewer:

When my WHS disconnects, I get a Warning message in my Event Viewer as folllows:

Event Type: Warning
 Event Source: ich9rmp
 Event Category: None
 Event ID: 129
 Date:  23/12/2011
 Time:  8:23:16 PM
 User:  N/A
 Computer: MyServer
 Description:
The description for Event ID ( 129 ) in Source ( ich9rmp ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: \Device\RaidPort0.
 Data:
 0000: 0f 00 10 00 01 00 68 00   ......h.
 0008: 00 00 00 00 81 00 04 80   ......
 0010: 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ........

 0030: 00 20 00 00 81 00 04 80   . ....

I then have to reboot is manually.  When I do this I get the following log file:

Event Type: Error
 Event Source: EventLog
 Event Category: None
 Event ID: 6008
 Date:  23/12/2011
 Time:  9:02:44 PM
 User:  N/A
 Computer: KAZHOMESREVER
 Description:
The previous system shutdown at 8:22:48 PM on 23/12/2011 was unexpected.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

 0018: 03 00 16 00 30 00 93 02   ....0..

I think the first event (129) is the flag I am looking for?  I am running WHS 2003 Service Pack 2.

Thanks

Ya, This is beyond any DLink help here.

I would try a different network adapter and see.
