New dir 655, major decrease in wireless and wired speeds.
« on: February 28, 2009, 09:41:44 PM »

First, i apologize about the length of this post, but i'm just trying to give as much information as I can think of.
I went from a Belkin N1 (very unreliable) to a new dlink dir655 (upgraded firmware yesterday (1.21), a4 hardware version) and my wireless is very slow. After reading the sticky about the slow dns relay, I updated to 1.21 beta11, and my speeds have not changed. My wired connection on my main computer has seen about a 10-15% decrease in speed, while my wireless has seen a 50-60% decrease.

All my cables are within a month or two old.
I used the dns server addresses from my carrier (att dsl 68.94.156.1). After still not resolving the slowness, I used Open dns addresses but the problem remains.
Ive given all my devices a static IP. (psp, 3 laptops (two vista, one linux), two desktops, ps3, ipod, cellphone). (max 3 wireless devices, 1 wired on at a time.. average 1 wireless and 1 wired)
My ps3 is using a wired connection, and instead of the 3 green bars for COD4, im now getting one yellow bar (lag). Ive set up port forwarding to the correct settings (using portforward.com). The lag didnt decrease, and putting it in DMZ, did nothing. Hooking my modem directly two my ps3 gives me full strength.

Im using a wep 128 encryption broadcasting in b/g. I have no issues with signal strength on any devices. (all 3-4 out of 4 bars). I have light traffic in my area, and a channel change does nothing.
I have the router bridged with the modem (I think that is the term. I didnt enter pppoe, instead, I did dhcp)
The router is set to enable dhcp.
I do not want to limit speeds to any device, so I didnt set up QoS.
I have pretty low traffic in my area, and a change of channels hasnt solved anything.
I have shut the firewalls off on all devices.
Ive rebooted everything numerous times.
Ive enabled/disabled IPv6 on all my devices.
Turning off dns relay does nothing.

Ive searched through several forums and found issues concerning speed and this router, but i havent come across a post that has had a resolution. Is it a bad configuration, is it a bad router, or is it user error?

For what its worth, I am a beginner when it comes to home networking, but ive always managed to google my problem to fix it.

Does anyone have suggestions on what I should try?

Question(s)

1. Who is your internet service provider?
2. You mentioned your N1 being unreliable. Does this current issue also affect your N1?
3. When you say you did not configure QoS, do you mean you disabled it altogether?
4. Did you disable WISH ?
5. What location are you?
6. Where do you do your test's to get the results?
7. What is the make and model of your modem?

Before you follow with the below, post the answers to these questions so that I can get some more information.

Some Suggestions

if not done so, use the gateway as switch. Turn off the wifi in the gateway, turn off DHCP, make sure ppoe passthrough is enabled in advanced>firewall have only 1 client connected to the router. Configure that client to connect to your service provider as if it were connected directly to the modem. Plug the ethernet cable from your modem directly into one of the now available 3 ports (the forth port is taken by your computer or ps3) But do NOT connect the modem to the WAN port. Nothing should be using the WAN port. Now connect to your provider and see if test comes back positive.

Once connected do a ipconfig in the command prompt and note your ip address/gway/dns. You should have an external IP address.

Set the gateway back up normally. You will have to disconnect from your PPoE connection. You will also have to set your ip address static. 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0 / 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.0.1 (ip address, subnet, gway, dns). Now connect to your router's config page and re-enable DHCP. Keep the wireless OFF. Next, configure the WAN portion (Setup>internet>manual) to PPoE. Dynamic IP, Enter your uname/pwd. Connect mode: Always on, keep mac address all zero's, mtu 1492. Now save settings, reboot.

Back in the router, go to status>device info chan WAN to make sure it's connected. If you want, you can go to tools>system check and ping some addresses. Make sure Virtual servers, port forwarding, network control/access, inbound filter are all disabled. Anything that would relate to blocking traffic, traffic shaping, routing should all be disabled. Make sure your DMZ is disabled as well. Keep your routers firewall enabled. if you dont' your surely get infected. However, make sure anti-spoof checking is disabled. If your firmware comes with securespot. disable it.

For the time being if the router asks you to reboot, you can select reboot later, but do NOT leave the routers website and make sure you reboot the device!! if you are going to do this. Or, just reboot router everytime it asks.

Do some more ping tests.

even more fun, do a tracert to some address and note the replies from it. You want to look at the time it takes (in ms) and note any request timed out.

Make sure this is done with only 1 computer connected to the device (which is why I say leave the wifi disabled).

Not sure if you said you had al linux box, but on windows, you may want to do a netstat -b

You may also want to go to the routers logs and notice any activity there (router saying it's dropping/blocking ip address / packets).

You can also go to the status page on and see if there are any errors / collisions on the LAN side.

Have to read the post first, but you might want to use bullet points next time so summarize. Keeps the post a lot shorter. Also applies to Lotacus... ;)

LOL.

thought maybe getting it all out in one post will keep the thread short. No need to ask a couple questions have him reply, and do the whole process over again. :P

I appreciate the help. Ive asked this question in other forums and it seems that I have a very bad modem/line issue, so im replacing both of them, then im going to tackle the router. I do prefer how lotacus  answered the post. I like having a list of things to try instead of just one at a time. I am working 55 hours a week while going to school, so its hard to find the time to try one thing, wait for a response, etc. I will post a response after everything gets situated.

I would download firmware 1.10 and install that.  I had all sorts of problems after upgrading to firmare version 1.11 from 1.10.  I wouldn't go back to 1.11 from 1.21.  They are similar.  1.21 just has more bells and whistles.

1.22 beta has not shown any serious bugs. So try that firmware .

Question(s)

1. Who is your internet service provider?-att
2. You mentioned your N1 being unreliable. Does this current issue also affect your N1?-no, the n1 was unreliable due to dropped network connections that did not affect the service itself. only the router had a problem.
3. When you say you did not configure QoS, do you mean you disabled it altogether?-yes, disabled
4. Did you disable WISH ?-disabled wish
5. What location are you?-indiana?
6. Where do you do your test's to get the results?-Dslreports and just basic use
7. What is the make and model of your modem?-speedstream 5100

Lost all internet. Ipconfig /renew or release gives me an error (no adapter is in a state....)

Thanks again for the response.
In the last few days this is what ive done (as it may help others in the future).
I upgraded my dsl connection to 6mbps and bought a new phone cord. I know upgrading the service may have not been the best thing to do, however I came across another thread in a google that gave me the impression that this router may not be able to handle slower dsl connections. (sorry i know longer have the link)
I was running at a 40% line latency before the upgrade, and now I have a 0% loss.
my speed tests (3 of each) through the router and with my computer hooked directly to the modem, showed nearly identical average speeds.
I turned wireless back on and the speeds on the wireless devices have improved.
It seems that my issues have been fixed through one of the multiple things recommended, so if anything comes up, I will post in this thread (so people finding this in the future may be able to fix the same problem.) if any other/reoccuring issues come up. If I do not post in here, then my problems are completely resolved.
thanks again for the help.
