What is the latest firmware for DIR-615?
« on: December 24, 2011, 10:43:33 AM »

I bought the DIR-615 router from Futureshop awhile ago because my Linksys WRT54G router keeps dropping connection every couple of hours. I have to unplug the router and re-plug it in order for it work again. On the DIR-615 admin page, it states Firmware Version: 5.10. Is this the latest firmware?

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware because I still experience connection drops from time to time (but not as much as I did with WRT54G)... it usually occurs when multiple devices are pulling signal from the router (for ex. PC#1 + PC#2 + laptop). I've just disabled "Short GI" as mentioned in another forum post here. Any other suggestions?

Lets see if there is other problems and suggestions that we can try before updating. Updating FW will not fix anything if there is some interference.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I have 2 of these routers at different locations. One of them at one location, the wireless would drop about every day. Other one seemed fine. Both configured identically. I swapped them, but didn't help - the malfunctioning routers worked fine now, but the one that worked was exhibiting the symptoms. The location were the wireless was malfunctioning has far more wireless traffic than the other location (2 laptops, regular VNC session with another computer at the same location). I even tried flashing dd-wrt and it has the SAME problem.

So I was already on a quest to deal with a problem with NAT timeouts http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42159.0 and other issues. Since both the stock firmware AND DD-WRT were exhibiting the same problems - on 2 different routers, it was probably kernel bug

After going through the source, i found that it uses the ath9k driver, a replacement for the old monolithic madwifi driver. After some searching many people using that driver were experiencing similar symptoms, but only when using AES when hardware encryption was enabled, turning off hardware encryption seems to fix it. There no way to do that on the router, so I switch it from mixed-mode to TKIP only, and the problem went away.
