After a year of fine performance my DIR 625 has suddenly become a massive headache. It seems to either be stuck in constant rebooting every 5-10 min that affects both my wired and wireless (N) connected computers. I've changed nothing on my end, and the problem is definitely the router as my wired PC is fine when plugged directly into the ADSL modem. I'm having a really hard time isolating the problem as it seems like so many variables are in play. Could it simply be a case of the router going bad due to hardware failure?

Here's a Coles notes of what I've tried to fix this:

  • Power-Cycling (unplug modem and router, plug in modem, wait 2 min, plug in router)
  • Factory Reset
  • Firmware Reload (1.09)
  • Manual Channel Selection
  • Turned off UPnP
  • Turned on MAC Filtering
  • Changed router IP to 192.168.1.1

I'm using DHCP and am cloning my Wired PC's MAC address as I'm using ADSL from TELUS.

I would really appreciate help with a) narrowing down the diagnosis to solve the problem or b) determining this is hardware failure so I can just bin this router and buy a reliable replacement.

I find this really difficult to test since it basically requires me to change one setting at a time and surf the web continuously until the connection drops. Then I goto the router and check what the log tells me and often it doesn't tell me anything at all. In fact, I've had the router DHCP go to "Disconnected' in the Status page and the log doesn't seem to be aware of it.

BTW, my wired and wireless PC's don't show a disconnected message when the internet drops, so I'm assuming atleast that the LAN is fine. Also I was running Bittorrent perfectly fine for a year. The current problems I'm having are basically with no internet activity besides one browser session!

Thank you!

This also happened to me (but I only have a DIR-615.)

What do your have near the router?  Any cordless phones (2.4Ghz , 5Ghz) and microwaves in the area.

Also, would you know what building materials are inside your walls?  Any "metal" wall studs??

On what is the router "resting on?"

Thanks for the reply smlunatick. Were you able to get your 615 back up and running?

The Router is sitting at the same place it alway has: a desk on one side of the house. We have DECT phones so there should be no interference there. The house is framed with solid wood studs. I've tried plugging the router into my UPS to see if it was line noise, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

The thing about is that nothing changed with my house, pc or configuration of the router. The 625 just started to become unreliable after an year of use! Even then, if the Wireless is running into interference, surely that shouldn't also shutdown the Wired PC's internet access too?

I think I would be happier if I had zero connectivity through the D-Link as I would then know that I had to buy another router.  :(

I have not been successful with the wireless turned on.  It keeps restarting whenever the wireless is turned on. And I am also running DECT 6 cordless phones and the microwave is 30 ft. away.  The router works "well" as a wired router.

A suggestion for both of you, based on my research. (I have not experienced dropped connections - yet.)

You may be experiencing interference from a neighboring wireless network. This is especially possible if your neighbor's router is using a double-wide (40 MHz) channel. AFAIK, the only way around this situation is to negotiate with your neighbor: You have to agree to restrict yourselves to non-overlapping channels (1, 6 or 11) and decide who will use which channel. You may also get relief by persuading your neighbor to use 20 MHz channels. (That's a setting in the router.)

The other possibility is to spend money on a router that broadcasts on the 5 GHz channel, which is much less crowded. However, I understand that 5 GHz has a much shorter range.

I'm starting to suspect that my DIR-625 B2 unit is starting to fail.  I'm evaluating a DIR-628 unit (currently the locally available replacement model to the DIR-625 router.)

This was happening to me.  I reset my router, downloaded the latest firmware, and haven't had any issue since.

I too download the latest available firmwares for router.  It did not really solve my problem.  I still had the 615(B2) router restart on me.  I have since evaluated a 628 and got the 615 (B2) warranty replaced.  I will be monitoring this for some time.
