SWTOR and blocked packets
« on: December 25, 2011, 10:43:05 AM »

I have a D-Link DSL 520B modem and a D-Link 4500 router for my home network which my dad and I use daily. I love my D-Link setup and it works great, we do a lot of MMo gaming on this setup with no problems, low latency etc. Lately we have been playing Star Wars the Old Republic which we have been playing since December 15th. SWTOR and our network have been getting along fine up until 12/24/11 X-Mas Eve. Out of nowhere we started experiencing Error 9000 ingame which amounts to getting disconnected from the server ingame and booted out of the game and back to the server selection screen.

Checking the logs for the router I see the following log entries constantly:

Blocked incoming TCP packet from 159.153.65.63:20069 to 75.75.217.33:52166 as PSH:ACK received but there is no active connection

Blocked incoming TCP packet from 159.153.65.64:20059 to 75.75.217.33:49972 as PSH:ACK received but there is no active connection

Blocked incoming TCP packet from 159.153.65.38:21616 to 75.75.217.33:52131 as PSH:ACK received but there is no active connection

Those are the three entries that constantly pop up while the game is running. The IP associated with SWTOR/Bioware/Electronic Arts is 159.153.92.41 so I would hazard a guess that the blocked packets are associated with the game. This just started happening on 12/24 from what I can tell and the game has been running fine on our network for over a week until now.

My question is how can I get the router to stop blocking those packets? Is there a Gaming Rule or Gamefuel setting I can do that will fix this issue? Or some other router setting?

The two computers used on this network are wired, there is a laptop connected via wireless but we don't game on the laptop and it is not even on while this issue occurs. I have firmware 1.23NA, MAC Address Filtering on, DNS Relay enabled, UPnP disabled, WISH Disabled, Wi-Fi Protect disabled. If there is any other info I could provide please let me know.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated and Merry X-Mas and Happy Holidays to all.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Might set up Gaming or Gamefuel later on for this game that you play.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What Hardware version is your router? A2
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status. Currently using 1.23NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Local DSL
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Using A D-Link DSL-520B router (D-Link all the way!)
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? D-Link DSL 520B
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems. Modem has been set to bridge since first installed in this setup.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section. They are
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. Makes no difference either way
Might set up Gaming or Gamefuel later on for this game that you play. I want to, but I admit to not being too knowledgeable on how to set it for a certain game.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual. Never has been turned onTurn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Done (following guides from you hehe, you the D-link MAN!)

My internet works fine otherwise though and no real problems with the D-Link router or modem. Love my D-link stuff for the most part.

This seems to be more related to the game and the game servers, strange that the router starts blocking packets from the game out of nowhere when the disconn's start happening. Hopefully Bioware gets the issue sorted out fast.

In the meantime I would still be interested in how to setup a Gamerfuel or Gaming Rule for SWTOR. I am not sure where to find some of the info needed such as IP rangees, Port and Remote IP ranges and so forth.

We have two comps on our network that we online game on together and they do fien for the most part, aside from this latest error with the game.

Do you have the port numbers for this game you use?

The ports they say to open for the game area 8995, 12000-12999 and 20000-30000 (TCP) as per the Bioware site for the game http://www.swtor.com/support/helpcenter/2010.

No I haven't because I am just not quite saavy enough to figure out all the settings for creating a Gaming or Gamefuel profile for the game. I set a Gaming rule for the game using the ports listed and the IP address for my computer no problem. But there is another PC on the network too that someone else plays SWTOR on and I am unable to setup another Gaming rule for that PC with the same port settings.

As far as creating a Gamefuel setup for SWTOR I am missing or not sure what to put in for the various listings of Local and Remote IP Ranges and Local and Port IP Ranges.

You will want to use Application Rules found under:

Advanced --> Special Applications

There you will want to place all of the ports for your game.  That will allow that specific traffic through your firewall to your LAN so both of your computers can access it.

If you need any help, there is a help button which will step you through in setting it up.

*Also* if both of your computer's IP address is right next to one another(If both pc's have 192.168.1.3, and 192.168.1.4), you can use GameFuel. Just place that in the range.  Local IP's are the IP addresses on your computer.  Remote IP range is the server of the game.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Thanks FurryNutz and fraggboy for your help with this so far. The issue was definitely gameside and seemed to suddenly correct itself for out network. No more error 9000 disconns.

I am going to use the info you have given me to make a Special Application or Gamefuel rule for SWTOR. I will look into Teamviewer and see what that can do for my router settings. Thanks again!
