Need help setting up new DIR 655
« on: December 26, 2011, 12:46:21 AM »

Hi,

Well, I know how to (at least the basics of) setting-up a home wireless connection - I've done DD-WRT on a Linksys router to extend my wireless range but that's about it.

I was hoping of getting better reception around the house with this router and lose the extender altogether
from my previous Netgear WG102 (main) - mainly because a greater percentage of the devices at home have wireless N capabilities - there are still G devices though.

I've done around a couple of hours of googling on what to do and finally got fed up so here I am.

This is what happens when I browse websites (pictures/images don't load):

And this happens a lot:

To answer FurryNutz's standard questions:
What Hardware version is your router?
HW Ver B1
What Firmware version is currently loaded?
FW Ver 2.00 - I've downloaded the latest firmware (2.03NA) but haven't updated it yet.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
DSL
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
Zyxel 100 - not sure if it's standalone or built-in - I'm assuming it's standalone (separate router)
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?it's in bridge mode
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Yes it is.
Turn off QoS options.
Done
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Done
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Done
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
I'm not sure how to do this
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Only using one device to set-up and yes.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Done - I also have SPI disabled, I've read this somewhere

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Tried different modes but getting the same results
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
WPA-Personal, WPA2-AES
What wireless devices do you have connected?
my lappy using Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300AGN and my Motorola Defy
Any cordless house phones?
Yes, I've shut it off and repositioned but to no avail.
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Only a couple showing using InSSIDer and a bit far from my area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I've disabled DNS Relay and images have started to load albeit a lot slower (i guess that makes sense) - so it's my internet connection now.

I'm not sure if it's completely solved - I'll come back later to verify.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.
