Xbox Live - Can't connect
« on: December 26, 2011, 07:25:50 PM »

I cannot connect to X-box live. The test connects to my router, to the internet, but fails on connecting to Xbox live. I tried changing from n to g. Set up port forwarding with dedicated IP address on xbox. Still same issue every-time. Even see the x-box listed on the router status page indicating that the static IP I assigned is hitting the router. I am out of ideas. Using WPA- personal for security and the X-box game adaptor with a D-Link- 655 router. Thoughts?

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Review the Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL sticky in the forum. It works well. I just tested out my 655 router up to the other day. It works.

Tried the below and answered in bold. Still same issue. All PC's work fine and other devices can connect via wireless. X-box shows Network connected, Internet connected, but Xbox live failed. Been going on for several days now so pretty sure not an Xbox live server issue.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status. 1.34NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Stand Alone
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Armstrong cable Arris - TM602g

- turned on Qos while troubleshooting this issue, found in a troubleshooting forum for a similar issue.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. It is off
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking Done
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. done
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Done

- As all other devices work, dont think this is an issue

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. - Open to anything

Doe the Arris modem have a built in router by chance. Just FYI, have seen problems using these modems with external routers. Do you have house phone service thru this modem?

Does the 655 router get a 192.168 address under the routers web page under Status/Device Info/Wan section or a ##.##.###.###?

Not 100% sure about built in router but dont believe so. It is for internet only, we have a separate line for phone. Yes, IP address is 192.168.x.x. Strange though that all PC's would work without any issues and only X-Box is giving trouble.

PS, just disabled all security and same result. Ruled that out at least.

Ya if the router is getting a 192.168 address, the Arris modem has a built in router. I don't think it can be disabled.

Need to see if you can access it. One thing you can do, if you can access the Arris modems web page, see if it has a DMZ, if so, put the 655 IP address it gets from the modem into the DMZ.

I would recommend if this modem is only for internet, get your own and buy a Motorola SB 6121 cable modem. They rock man. Works great with these routers.

Well, after some googling, I found out how to access the modem page, unfortunately though I need to enter a "password of the day" to get to the advanced tab. No options to make any changes other than that. Do you think that is the issue? If so I guess I can buy my own. Will I have a lot of configuration once I do? Will that require contacting my ISP and having them walk me through set up? Thanks for your help
