Backup of my 325 to another external hd?
« on: December 29, 2011, 07:29:47 PM »

Hey All,

been running my NAS at home for the last bit...and am trying to figure out how best to back it up....

currently for performance running in raid 0 mode.....I cant back up to an online source..(as i was with the external hd this replaced) as most if not all onlione backup (mozy, carbonite) wont back up to network drives....

Can i plug an external hd into the usb on the 325 and do a local backup??.....can i backup to a external on the network?

Thanks

Paul

How about using rsync to backup to rsync.net ? Yes, it's not the most cheapest one, but they have actually quite nice article stating the differences of cheap online backups and themselves.
Google for "Flat Rate Storage Services vs. rsync.net", it's the 1st link.

Hi Paul,
I had a thought, many types of software won't use a NAS as a source, but if you mapped the drive to your windows machine, couldn't that work with one of those online backup services?

Hey thanks I'll check that out .....on another note, I did plug a USB hd into my dlink and it seems to recognize it
But the backup apps on the 325 don't see it....

Ya mine is mapped as z: but most of the online backup guys seem to have a way of figuring out which are network and which are local drives..... I just want to find out if I can back up to a USB drive from the nas automatically
