Never expiring IPs
« on: December 30, 2011, 10:45:27 PM »

Hello,

I've recently switched from a DIR-300 to a DIR-615 because I needed to stream video to one of my TVs. As soon as I got the router I upgraded it to 8.02 (the revision of the router is H1). But I have noticed a problem. The IPs never expire. If I connect a device I get the IP correctly. On the network settings page the expires keeps counting... If I disconnect that device the date reverts to the current date and time and keeps counting, just like a clock would. Basically it never expires, whatever I do. I'm sure that not a normal situation. Already tried resetting it to factory default a few times, but it didn't help. Do you have any idea what could be the problem?

Thank you very much.

This is not a problem or bug with the FW, routers work like this. The least from the server on the router is for a period of time. Even after you disconnect the cable and device, and plug it back in, it will get the same IP address. if you disconnect the cable and device or say a 24 hour or longer period, it might come back with a different one however might get the same depending on if the previous IP address is in use or not.

This is the function of the router and to be more detailed, it's hightly recommended to reserve the IP addresses for ALL devices you connected to the router under Setup/Networking. This helps ensure each device gets it's own IP addresses every time, and that they don't conflict with any other address, helps ensure the other options set by you in the router are maintained and not broke should the IP address change by accident and helps in troubleshooting.

Maybe I haven't been very clear... For example I connect a device. It gets an IP and an expiry date/time (for example 24h later). Once I disconnect that device the expiry date changes to the current date/time and it gets incremented every second (its just like a clock). If I connect the same device a week later, it receives the same IP as before. So no expiry...
Also even if you click Revoke and the connect the same device that used the IP just revoked, gets the same IP not the first free IP.

I very much would like to reserve IP's, but most of my devices don't give a host name and I have observed a different bug... If you don't complete a host name the reserve does not work. I do have the reserve feature on, but only for my computers (which have a host name).

Again, if the revoke IP address is not free, and not being used, then it's possible to get the same IP address. The only way to test this out would be to disconnect the one device, revoke the IP address, then connect a different device and see if it gets that same IP address from the 1st device or not.

Host names get populated by the HOST NAME information comming from the device. If the HOST NAME isn't entered into the PC, i.e. windows then they will be blank. Some devices don't support this naming option so they will be blank and the only ways of find out what IP addresses are in the list would be to turn everything off accept for one PC, get it reserved, then turn on the next device, reserve it and do this until your done. Yes you have to give a NAME when you reserve it so it can give it anything that you see fit, I use names so I know what the devices are. It's pretty easy. You can also look on the devices and see the network IP address on the device, there you can tell what the device is by comparing it to the list.

That's exactly what I did. I connected a Samsung Galaxy Ace, disconnected, revoked and connected a Sony-Ericsson phone. Didn't get the IP Samsung had, but the next one.

Did you happen to restart the router after you revoked the IP address?

I would reserve everything then you'll know you have good IP addressing for your devices. It's what I use here for years. I have about 20 devices on my system.

Yes... That does seem to do the work... It seems I have to reboot the router in order to really release the IPs.

Also I tried writing something in the blank Hostname (for those devices that have none) and it does seem to work well. Unfortunately there seems to be a limit in the number of IP's I can reserve, 8 being the limit.

Thank you very much for all your help and have a Happy New Year!

If you need more reservations for you devices, I might look into getting into a different model Dlink router. There are many that do well for many different types of networking. Enjoy.
