I have a DIR-825 in my basement at one end of the house and it works great.  My problem is the signal strength is a little weak on the main floor at the other end of the house.  I would like to add a second access point to cover that end of the house.  Do I need to get another DIR-825 and wire it to the original or is there another option?  I obviously don't need all the features of the DIR-825 for the 2nd AP, but I cant find a less expensive option that will still allow me to use both bands.

Hi Andy,

You need an access point, not a router. The DAP-1360 or similar.

There should be someone along shortly to recommend something, if not, I will. You can actually go pretty cheap just for an access point, I run 2 AP's at home with my DIR-825, works good!

I guess it would have been simpler if I would have just asked if there was a dual band access point that works with the DIR-825.  Ive been looking and cant find one, so I was going to use a 2nd DIR-825 as and access point.

I kinda sorta am doing what you want to do now.  I've got my main router (Dlink 655) in the basement.  It's connected to my media/computer room 2 floors up and the master bedroom 1 floor up on the other side of the house using the original cat5 phone cable in my house w/new network connectors.

The 655 gives me good 2.4Ghz coverage in the basement, backyard and a few rooms directly 1 floor above.  The further away from the router you go the signal strength and connection speeds drop.  So I have the DLINK 825 in the bedroom with supporting another 2.4Ghz zone.

The Media/computer room has a 8 port switch for direct connections.  I could've put another wireless router up there but I don't mind cables along the walls so I went with the switch.

I setup 2 different wireless zones (using different names - meaning not using roaming) because some of my wireless G devices would try to connect to the wireless  AP that was further away. 

If you like the 825 you could get a 2nd one or find another brand that's cheaper or has better reviews.   Only the wireless features are being used in the 2nd router/AP.

Where is Furry? I am pretty sure he is doing this at home. My AP's are not from D-Link, they are not dual band(BGN/High power) but work great with the DIR-825 as the DHCP! As I said, I have 2 of them. I use 2 separate frequencies so they don't interfere. My kids beat the heck out of them, the Dir-825 serves up IPV6 addresses and everything through IPV4 only AP's, I still have not figured that one out.......

Nope, can't find one either. They all seem to be dual band switchable, one or the other but not both at the same time. I did find one for businesses from D-Link, but you can buy 3 or 4 DIR-825's for the same price.

I would go with the DIR-825 in bridge mode.

Yes you can turn the 825 into a AP. Review the DGL-4500 forum for the Turn a router into and AP.
