Is my DNS-323 dead?!
« on: January 05, 2012, 12:19:48 PM »

Hi all,
My NAS seemed to have died on me...or so I think. The problem started the other day. The unit would boot up, all lights would blink as normal and once it got settled I could see it over my network no problem. Within a couple minutes of it being ON, I suddenly lost connection to it over the network. I went to look at the LEDs on the front panel and the network icon was off...but the drives were still on. I couldn't do anything so I unplugged the unit, waited a few mins and plugged it back in. The same thing happened...so I unplugged the unit again, let it sit for a couple of mins again and plugged it back in. Went to turn the unit back on and this time NOTHING. No lights lighting up, no noise of the drives spinning up...NOTHING. :(

Is it my power supply or is the board in the unit toast? Can D-Link replace the inner board or am I SOL?

You could do a simple check on your power supply with a multi meter to see if you have both 12v and 5v at the plug - just be very careful you don't short out any of the pins.

If the PS is bad that might be the answer to your problem.  That is the first thing you should check anyway.

Does it have a green LED? Is it on?

Start simple

Agreed dosborne, but that only monitors one of the two voltages.  If it is on then UnDeRFLiP  will still need to test the voltages to check they are both there.

We had a similar power supply for a different piece of equipment that a client brought in - one voltage rail was OK the other was dead.

I wasn't trying to imply you were incorrect. I just thought it may be the first thing to check particularly if a meter is not handy. If there is no LED, then not much point going further.

I didn't think you did ;) but the hardware engineer in me tends to not rely on lights especially when more than one voltage is available, but as you say, no light big problem.
