DIR-628 connection dropouts
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:42:01 AM »

I have had a DIR-628 for a couple of years now, and for the most part it hasn't given me any problems. Lately though I am experiencing regular Wireless signal dropout. IT is occurring on multiple wireless devices in our home. At any given time there is a Macbook, A PC laptop, 2 ipod touch, and an iphone sharing the wireless signal. When it drops, they all lose connection.

I have contacted our internet provider because I initially thought the problem was with the internet signal, but the Tech I spoke to was able to monitor my incoming signal and check on activity over the past week or so, and he said the signal was strong and showed no sign of a problem. We are using a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem, provided by the supplier. Out if curiosity, I connected my Macbook directly to a port on the modem via ethernet, and I haven't experienced any dropouts since.

My Router is running as follows:
Firmware 1.24NA
2,4ghz
Mixed n and g
Auto channel scan
WPA Personal security
Auto WPA mode

Hopefully someone has some suggestions as to what might be causing this. IF you need more information about the router settings please let me know.

Thanks

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. Having other WiFi routers near by can cause issues like this. Find an open channel if there is one available and manually set it.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Wow...lots of info! Thanks.

I've made all the changes you've suggested. Many of the things were enabled/opposite to what you mentioned, and the DNS addresses weren't where they should have been.

Regarding things like ipods, ipads etc. How do they fit with all of this?

I'll reboot the router now, and monitor things for a while to see if its improved.

Just wanted to update you...

Since you provided the suggestions for the router, I haven't been experiencing the drop outs I was before, and it seems that the signal strength and stability are much better also. I downloaded the app you suggested to monitor the signal strength, and its basically a steady flat line.

So far so good! Thanks again

Hello again,

Just wanted to update the situation I was experiencing with my signal dropping. Things have been much improved since I followed your suggestions, aside from one PC laptop running Windows 7. It seems to still drop the connection a couple of times a day. Usually I"m able to just open the connections status tab and click Connect again, but it's a bit of an annoyance. I'm wondering if you have any suggestions? I have set it up as a reserved device, but it is using DHCP. Should I give it a static IP?

THanks

Need to set up reserved IP address for your PC ON the router and the PC should be setup for Automatic.

Also does the wireless adapter on your PC have any additional properties and options with in it's settings?
What wireless modes are you using now on the router?

Hi

The IP address is reserved on the Router for the PC, and set to Automatic on the laptop itself.

The Wireless adapter is an Atheros AR5893. There are advanced options as follows, but they are all set to default:

-802.11b Preamble
-AdHoc 11n
-Dynamic MIMO Power Save
-Network Address
-Recieve buffers
-Scan Valid Intervals
-Transmit buffers

If you have any suggestions for these....

Any sub options for these main ones your seeing?

There has been some issues with Atheros WiFi and some routers.

Is this an adapter that can be changed out or can you test with a different adapter to see? Something like a DWA model from DLink?

When I select the option there is a drop down to the right of it with some sub items...if you can give me a better idea of what to look for I can let you know.

Unfortunately, this is a built in adapter on a Gateway laptop, and I don't have anything else to test. All the other computers in the house are Macs.

Maybe someone can review those wireless settings with you using teamviewer.

Sure...I have Teamviewer on there already.

That would be a big help.

Router was set for mixed all wireless modes. Set for Mixed G and N and turned off Short GI.
Mentioned to turn off 3rd party firewall programs and let the router handle that.

Please report results after a few days.
