Extremely low MBPS
« on: March 04, 2009, 01:47:17 PM »

Hello, I am receiving an extremely low MBPS rate specifically on my Laptop. I was using a Belkin Wireless N PCMCIA adapter until I was having some weird disconnect issues with my online gaming. I switched back to the system's stock Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection on-board wi-fi adapter and had no problems. Recently I've run into 2 or more instances where I unexpectedly have 1-2 mbps. I rand a speed test and found my connections download speeds to be normal (577 kbps), but my upload speeds were fubar at 477 kbps. I have one hard wired desktop machine in my basement (10/100 mbps) and a few wireless devices connected to it (Wii, iMac (N), and my laptop). Looking at the Wireless tab I see my Mac at 40% signal and 24mbps and my computer fluctuating between 36% and 24% signal with 1-2mbps. My router sits in the basement office next to my tower and 2.4ghz phone. My iMac is on the main floor (middle) and my laptop is on the top floor in my room. I've not had any problems before now and after I set my port forwarding for online games like World of Warcraft I have run into an odd disconnection issue and this new low mbps. Let me know if anybody has seen similiar situations or knows what may be an issue. I know the problem most likely doesn't lye in my router seeing as how its working on my Mac, but pleas provide help where available.

I'm actually up to 12mbps AFTER writing this post. I have no clue why it went back to this. I don't normally have any programs running in the background but I've been having some issues with my Spysweeper picking up a component of my Trend Micro Antivirus... I also run SpeedUpMyPC and RegistryBooster in the background (need to set those to not run upon startup).

What firmware version are you on?

You probably won't benefit from the programs running...but that's up to you.
AV can be a real pain with networking. try running another or disable it to see how the connection is without it.

I would suggest researching the causes of wireless degredation and factors to take into concideration that would determine proper wireless gateway placement.

Perhaps re-location of the gateway.
