Ethernet Not Working but Wifi YES !!!!
« on: January 08, 2012, 09:45:51 AM »

I'm having the following strange behaviour with the DIR-615.

I have connected the router via ethernet to Laptop1 on Port 1, a NAS on Port 2 and on Port 3 I have a Netgear Powerline that connects to my PS3, and I use the wifi connection for my Laptop 2 and my mobile phone.

In the past, I used to use the remaining ethernet on the router (Port 4) to connect also my Laptop 2, therefore the ethernet cable still connected to port 4, but is not connected to the laptop anymore.

Yesterday suddenly I decided to unplug this ethernet cable from port 4 that is not used, and suddenly, I lost connectivity both internal and to the internet to my devices connected to the ethernet ports (Laptop 1, NAS, and PS3 connected with the Powerline), but wireless still working fine.  When troubleshooting with windows 7, it tells me that there is a problem with the DNS.

What can be the problem in the router??   I have done almost anything, resetting the router, flushing dns on the laptop, enabling/disabling DNS relay on the router, but nothing happens.

Thanks

Swap out cables and try different ports on the back.
You can check the status to see if the connections are being make by looking at the routers web page under Status/Device Info/Lan Computers. It will show connections if LAN wired devices are connected and ON.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking.
Make sure your devices are set up for auto obtain IP addressing under there network properties.
Try a factory reset of the router.

Let us know.

Hello Furry Nutz

I swapped cables on the different ports in the back and the situation is the same.  The lights blink solidly and I have also checked on the router and it shows that the LAN wired connections are on. I also did many factory reset to the router and all devices are configured to obtain automatically IP addresses but still does not work the ethernet connectivity.
From the wired PC I can reach the router default GW by pinging it to 192.168.0.1, but when trying to ping to the internet I cannot.

I don't know what else can I do, I'm starting to think it might be a problem with the router itself, or can it be a problem on the ethernet NIC driver of the PC?

Can you try a different PC or NIC?

Can you open the routers web page from a browser? If your pinging the router on wired, I think your connection is good up to the router. Might a something in the router or past that.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

I'm going to try a different PC. I updated the NIC drivers but same status

From the wired PC I cannot open the web page of the router from the browser but I can ping the router, which is very strange. But from the wireless connection I can open the router browser web page even though many times I see the message "Please wait...The gateway is currently measuring your network connection. Accessing this web page might have an effect on the measurement."
This page will refresh shortly.
Could it be a problem of the ethernet NIC card on the wired PC?

The HW version is E1 and the firmware loaded is 5.01NA

I use Cable ISP service and the ISP modem is standalone

Possible that the NIC on the PC is bad, only way to test it to try a different NIC or PC. Keep us posted.

I would turn off Automatic Uplink Speed as this will remove the "Please wait...The gateway is currently measuring your network connection. Accessing this web page might have an effect on the measurement." message.

I would swap out cables too to be sure and test. Try a different LAN Port on the back. Do they all exhibit the same thing?
