MW3 PC NAT Strict
« on: January 10, 2012, 08:27:51 PM »

Hello all, my name is Matt. I  just upgraded my router  to the DIR-655  and am  having problems getting my  NAT to Open in MW3 PC version.  I have a B1 2.00NA.  Read http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42405.0 thread and  followed instructions there but am still getting strict. I can  achieve moderate  if  I disable QOS, but don't want to do that, nor do I  want to enable a DMZ.  Port checker says 27014 is closed even though  it is forwarded in the router. I have Time  Warner and  Moto Surfboard SB5101.

Have you followed this:
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-655v2/Call_of_Duty_-_Modern_Warfare_3.htm

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Okay, all of the above has been done, but I'm still only  getting Moderate for  my  NAT  type. I've gotta say, this router has given me more  trouble than any other I have owned, the  range isn't that great either.  I can walk ten  feet down the hall and drop 3 bars.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES or AES only.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I'm using  MAC  filtering for my  security.  Mixed  G  and  N because of my printer, or would only use N.  Gonna try turning off short GI.

Is there anything else I can  do to get my NAT open, short of DMZ?

You shouldn't be using Mac filtering as a security measure. The security mode I was refering to is the WiFi security. The WiFi radio needs security measures as well.
Might set a manual channel of 1, 6 or 11 and see how that goes.

Might review the gaming, QoS sticky for XBL. Set up a QoS rule same as the xbox and point it to the IP address of your PC.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Every time I  enable QOS,  no matter what the rule, my NAT goes back to Strict....

Problem with NAT, you should change the NAT to Endpoint Independent.

Both UDP  and  TCP are endpoint independent.

Talked to one of the guys in the forum and he mentioned that some of the web site port checkers give false negatives. I spent about an hour with a 655, 657 and a 825 and that one site never said any thing about an OPEN port. He mentioned that there is a couple of FTP processes that can be used to check for ports. I'm waiting on the info on how to do that. He's at CES so he's kind of busy.
