Configure DIR-655 as an AP / Gb Switch ONLY?
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:27:20 AM »

Is it possible?  I don't want the unit to do anything but act as an AP and a switch.  I have another router that works better for me, and I want to connect the DIR-655 to that router's LAN.

Would I just turn off DHCP and connect a LAN port of the DIR-655 to a LAN port of my other router?

Will this effectively disable the firewall on the DIR-655?  I don't want it to do anything at all but the above 2 things.

Thanks for the help.

Just give it a try (also, set firewall settings to endpoint independent). Nothing ventured, nothing gained. And it's risk free.

Yes, this is correct.  I have my DIR-655 setup this way and it works fine as an wireless N AP and GB Switch.  Just remember you still need to setup your wireless security.  The only down side is the WAN LED keep blinking because there is no Ethernet cable attached to the the WAN port.  I just covered the blinking LED with small piece of electrical tape to keep it from annoying me.

Hey thanks!  I really appreciate your response.  I will have to give it a shot.  I was going to do some tinkering, but I wanted to know if anyone had success with this configuration first.

Again, thanks!

Mig, you get +1 Karma for your help.  How do I give the Karma to you?  Sorry, I can't figure that out either!

Thanks!  +1

The firewall settings that you are talking about, will they apply to my situation?  If I connect a LAN port from Router A to a LAN port on Router B (DIR-655)?

I assume that the firewall is only "between" the Gb Switch / Wireless N AP and the WAN port.  If no traffic is going through the WAN port, is the firewall even effective?

Curious.

firewall is non-effective. only effective on the WAN side.
