Cannot connect wireless XP machines
« on: March 05, 2009, 09:08:57 PM »

My problem is I can not connect my XP machines wirelessly to my router when security of any kind is enabled. I.e. if I disable the network security in my router (Hardware A4, Firmware 1.21) I can connect, but if I set any of the variations (WEP, WPA, etc.) the XP machines will not connect. However, the Linux machine will connect regardless. And the XP machines will connect just fine with a cable.

Thanks in advance for the help,

~RainMaker

Are the XP machines fully patched?
Are you using the Dlink Connenction Manager or Windows to manage the Wireless connection?

Try uninstalling the DLink Manager from Add/Remove and just use Windows to manage the connection.  When you reboot after the uninstall, if Windows asks you for drivers, just point it to the folder that has the drivers in it, don't run the setup routine.

Forgot to ask: what brand card are you using for your wireless?

A couple one is a D-Link GWL-G650 a D-Link WNA-2330 and a Belkin something or other (I'll look it up if its important).  The Linux machine is whatever is on-board the Acer Aspire One Netbook.

Until a few days ago I was using a D-Link DI-624 and everything was cool (you know except for the speed thing).

I'll give your suggestion a shot tomorrow..and any others anyone else has.

Thanks,

If you have ever attempted connecting before, remove the ssid from the preferred networks or edit the connection and make sure the authentication is not set to 802.1x. Try manually setting the channle the caff uses, at the driver level as well.

Maybe even boot to safe mode with networking and yet to connect manually.

Hi Rainmaker,

The clue is that the XP Machines will not connect when any Security is enabled.

Post back with the following information:
Wireless Cards in use: Include the Hardware revision. Ex. DWL-G650 Revision A
Also which XP operating system is in use on all computers: Ex. Windows XP Media Edition Service Pack 2.
On the D-Link Router, which Security is being employed: None, WEP or another.

You left out the above information, which is extremely important when posting for help.

Let's deal with one machien at a time.

The laptop that with the issue...
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 with a D-Link DWL-650 (Utility Version 2.42, Driver 2.1.3.1).

The router...
DIR-655 (Hardware: A4, Firmware: 1.21)

When the router employs a WPA-Personal security setting the laptop will not connect.  When the security is set to 'None' it will connect.

Thanks,

Try putting SP3 on the laptop, I know there was some updates for the WPA/WPA2 stuff in it.

Also try using it without the DLink Network Manager, totally uninstall the manager and let Windows manage the connection.

Yep, Win XP SP2 does not support WPA2, unless you manually install this patch.

If Rainmaker has only tried WPA2, this explains everything.

WEP and WPA do work in Win XP SP2 however.

The WPA2 patch is included in Win XP SP3.

Hi Rainmaker,

This card: D-Link DWL-650, what revision number is this?
http://www.support.dlink.com/downloads/
Go to the DWL-650 Download Page. You need to select the correct Revision for the Card.

Many of these cards do not handle WPA or WPA2 Only schemes for Encryptions. You are correcting to a D-Link DIR-655 A4 Router. When connecting Wireless Computers, you need to buy matching Adapters for better performance.

http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=530

You have several matching type of Adapters for the Notebook Computers to choose from.
I would prefer myself to buy the DWA-652 Xtreme N Notebook Adapter to work with the D-Link DIR-655 Router, if I had a Notebook Computer.

Your older Adapters can't handle the newer Encryptions or any encrptions at all.
