Local Backup
« on: January 16, 2012, 04:57:41 AM »

About to add a second drive to my DNS320 and judging by what I have read so far it doesn't seem to allow you to add a new drive and have it formatted and then setup as RAID 1, if you already have 1 drive setup.

Therefore my thoughts are to add the drive as a Standard volume (by inserting drive by itself and formatting), then adding the second drive so I have Volume_1 and Volume_2.

Is it possible to then set up an automatic local backup between the 2 volumes.

I can see an Internal Backup as part of Local Backup. What would I need to set all the other fields to so it did a full backup (i.e all folders/files)

thanks

Neal

Hi,
You are supposed to be able to setup the new drive as raid 1 right from the start, but it is not a bad idea to use the local backup as you mentioned.  This way is actually a little safer in my opinion as it protects against some types of problems like accidental deletions, etc.  The down side is that the local backup only allows you to do backups at the "folder" level.  What this means is that however many folders you have in the root of Volume_1, you will have to schedule a backup of each one of them.  This is not too big a deal if you are able to group all of your data into just a few folders, but the more folders you have to backup the more you have to schedule, if you understand what I mean.  If you can group everything into say, videos, photos, and music, it should work ok.  The only other option I can think of is to use some "external" backup software to like "syncback" to backup Volume_1 to Volume_2.  It depends on your setup.  Anyway, good luck.

Ok. Set this up and fortunately you can set Internal Backup to backup from Volume_1 to Volume_2. (i.e. everything).

This backups all folders/files and nested folders/files. I have it set up as Incremental, so as not to copy everything every time. It seems to work okay.

Hope this helps others.
