« on: January 17, 2012, 03:36:53 AM »

Hi guys just need a little nudge in the right direction.
Just purchased a 323 and I really think I've gone and don't the wrong thing :(
Im using a mac on osx lion and I had 2 750gb hdds sitting around so I though buy one of theses
For saving my pics videos on. Looking into now after I brought it looks like its not a good thing to use with lion.
Not took it out the box yet so can you please send me in the right direction. Can I use this in USB or is it just over a network. Lion does not support samba so not sure also I don't want it for time machine just a simple storage for all my files. Thanks guys

I am not sure if my comments will help, but they are better than nothing.

There is much less support for OS X that there is for Windows systems.  I have a 10.6.8 system and use the DNS-323 for backup only.  The disks on the 323 are formatted as Standard and I use SuperDuper to back my system twice, once to each disk as incremental backups.  SuperDuper creates sparse image files so samba is not an issue.

I like FireFox better than Safari for the web interface, but I had some problems determining the ip address that was assigned.  It would be nice if there was a version of the Easy Search Utility for OS X.

Also try searching the forum for Lion + 323.

It cannot be used as a USB drive - it's intended to be a NAS and your choices for file storage access are the ftp & SMB/CIFS protocols, which are pretty much the defacto file sharing standards.

If your client OS does not support the SMB protocol, it may be an idea to return the NAS and find something that will work with your client OS - OR - switch to a less restrictive OS.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
