Need help
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:05:43 AM »

So i have had my 655 for almost a year now. i bought it thinking that it was/ or can be a great gaming router. well so far its has been a total let down. mind you that its most likely my fault. i have zero exp. setting up networks (software side of it). but here is my problem.

My set up: TWC cable modem (Sc DPC 2100)  to Dir-655 to PS3. all wired. I'm suppose to be downloading at 20Mbs. well with my PC's, 2 laptops and tablet, i receive 18 Mbs wired and wireless. but when i check my PS3 I'm lucky to get 6-10 Mbs.

now i have read the sticky about the Game fuel, and i have tried resetting everything, static IP address, all the info i have found on line. i still i keep getting booted when i join a game, or most of the time i cannot join a party. its really starting to piss me off. no matter what changes I make it gets worse than factory setting. i have read for hours on different ways to set up the router and what not. i have changed settings on the PS3, router and still getting nowhere.

if i go to my cousins house and play my PS3 there wireless i have zero problems. now i live in a small neighbor hood and can pick up at least 7 wireless connection with my laptop in the house. (not sure if it matters but just putting it out there).
so can some one pls tell me how to set this thing up before i use it as anger management.?
i know how to access the router page . but i don't get the setting up port forwarding i.

Is the PS wired or wireless when gaming, preferred is wired.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. Can set thsi up later.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

some answers for you (FurryNutz)

the PS3 is wired
the firmware is the mose current and the hadware i will check and let you know when i get home
the modem is a standalone (scientific atlanta dpc2100)

and i will check the settings as soon as i get home. they should be back at the factory settings. i reboot the router back to them yesterday.

thanks for the quick response. im no computer/ networking person and this is the first and only time i have delt with any of this stuff. its not easy to learn. just wished it was plug and play.
i think i got a router that does way more than i need it to

You have a good router, just needs some configuration for PSN.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

There are few things you have to enable for the game on the router:

UPnP
Multicast Streams
MMS/FTP under (Application Level Gateway)
Firewall--NAT-- Endpoint Restriction

Manual Uplink Speed -- similar or higher than your ISP uplink speed

Glad it's all working now.

I Set up QoS PSN ports and configured the router.

Enjoy.
