Curious to reason for connection lose
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:30:01 AM »

Hello there forum goers :). I just got done dealing with this stupid cox modem again.. All of a sudden it had went back to downstream and was sitting there blinking for at least 20 minutes.. but anywho..

I unplugged n replugged the router, and It reminded me that since I've gotten it every day or so I'll be doing anything on my computer(playing game, browsing web). And it's usually great. But when I have my wireless ps3s browser going for music I usually lose connection at least once every other day.. It's for no more then 5-6 seconds, but It got me wondering as to why It's doing that.. I'am no pro at all with networking, but I did the basics im sure. But I can't figure out why I would lose connection for some seconds.. Cox has a habit of having issues in my area, but I don't think it's that..
I'm running the 2.03NA firmware version of the router.. I have seen people suggesting to do some sort of hard reset, but not sure if that'd do much.
there is a cordless house phone by the router..it's placed as far away as possible while still being able to plug in.

Do you set auto channel on the router?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Yes turn off ALL QoS optons to test.

Can you find out if the cordless phone is running in the 2.4Ghz range, if so, might be your cause or intermittent disconnections on WiFi. Might just unplug the phone or move it to a different room and test.

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Let us know if you need more help.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

k turned of all QOS

I checked the phone and say no range on it.. the phone is cordless, but the base(charging base thing) it sits in is connected to the router so I can't really move it that far. The phone said 0.0 B on the bottom, doubt that means anything.

I would try G or mixed, but after i did all the settings and before turning off qos all the way I wasn't able to load up sites.. saying couldn't find connection for some weird reason, even though I have the globe and the modem as the lights on that it needs...

EDIT: Sites are loading now, my ps3 finally is getting the signal. I'm signed in, and in a few minutes after a reply im gonna play game on pc and see what happens..

If your on PSN, might need to set up ports for PSN in the QoS rules. That will get you open NAT status.

Some sites seem to be taking a few seconds, but I'll keep what settings I have now and update you later on how it's been.

There is a sticky in the DGL-4500 for setting up PSN ports.

I need to get it updated for DIR series routers however the date works the same in QoS. I set up a router last nite for a user so if you need help with that when you get to that, let us know.

PSN requires these ports to be open so your NAT status will be OPEN and not moderate or strict.
80, 443, 5223    TCP   PlayStationŽNetwork server
3478, 3479   UDP   PlayStationŽNetwork server
3658              UDP   PS3™ voice/video chat and online gaming

It's fairly simple to do.

Yes you'll need to enable QoS again.

Maybe someone can help with your router settings using teamviewer with you.
