DIR-655 REVB wired connection resets 100's of times each day
« on: January 20, 2012, 05:55:05 AM »

I bought a new DIR-655 REVB router, I already own the first version of the DIR-655 and worked fine, but the wireless range wasn't always the highest upstairs in my house and I was hoping with REVB they had improved the DIR-655's range.  I'm not a big wireless guy, meaning if I can use a hardwire connection I will use it, so my house is pretty well wired, but for my daughter and son's ipod and Zune the wireless connection was weak in their upstairs bedrooms.  It has been a disaster, the wired connections gets disconnected constantly, I say in the subject title 100's of times a day and I don't think I am exaggerating.  It started with Netflix and I thought my son was crazy, how could new router do this, but it was doing it everywhere.  It is hard to download files because I lose my connection.  I have DSL through Windstream.  My solution is to reinstall my old DIR-655.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What kind of DSL modem do you use?  Check the DSL modem for the DHCP setting.  Then check the router DHCP setting to make sure the router WAN receive the ISP IP all the time.  Once the router lost the ISP IP address, it resets itself.  If the DSL works for the older version dir-655, use the same settings should work for the newer version dir-655.

I have a dir-635 A1 and a dir-655 A4, I put a tin can top under the router at the basement.  The signals at the second floor always have full bars.  A ground plane for the antenna is important.  It work like the vehicle antenna use the vehicle body as the ground plane.  Three antennas have to be in the verticle position with line of sight direction toward the receiving devices.  Use channel 1 instead of channels 2-11.  Lower frequency has a higher transfer rate through the walls than the higher frequency.

According to the Europe dir655 firmware correction, try to disable the SP1 to stop the tcp disconnected.

Thanks for all the replies, very much appreciated.  The bottom line is I am still getting disconnected.  I followed FurryNutz suggestions.  Some of them I had already in place.  Anytime I try to download a "large" file size I still get interrupted and download stops.  Netflix on the XBox will play for a while and then I will get disconnected.  Then it will say I need an XBox Live Gold account, meaning I have lost total connection and router is resetting again.  I seems like anytime significant data starts coming through connection gets disconnected, maybe not right away, but within 30 minutes.  Right now my Connection Up Time is 30 minutes and counting, but I am not downloading any significant amount of data.

I using WPA-Personal mode
mixed G and N
WPA2 only AES only
Wireless devices are an IPod, Zune, IPad
Our cordless phone is a Panasonic Dect 6.0 with 5 handsets
There are other WiFi routers near me, probably at least 3 or 4
I also turned off Short GI

I am running the latest firmware 2.03NA

slpip reply said disable SP1, where is SP1, I can't find where that option is, please let me know, thanks.

I am getting to the point now that I should reconnect up my old DIR-655 router and see what I get, because my connection problems started with my new Dir-655 REVB

Forget to mention:

Modem does not have a router, it is a Gigaset 4300 ethernet ADSL Modem, Part No. 060R-D148-A27

This model modem has some form of router so you need to verify your DSL modem is bridged first off. It may not be. I would contact your ISP and see if they can help you bridge the modem or find out what mode its operating in. You might need PPPoE account user name and password information to put into the 655 Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection type section. Select ALways ON option too. Ask the ISP if the router needs to use PPPoE or DHCP.

Once this is done, then you should be good to go. I have seem some issues with this brand of modem and external routers.

Also if you can get the modem to bridge, try using the DMZ on the modem and input the IP address that the 655 gets from the modem if the modem has a DMZ.

Let us know how it goes.
