Disk upgrade strategies?
« on: March 08, 2009, 11:31:14 PM »

Hi,

I would like to upgrade the disks in my DNS-321 that is currently configured with 2 500GB matching drives in Raid-1 (mirror), to a 1TB or 1.5TB Raid-1 setup. I would like to do this while preserving the current data on 500GB Raid-1 setup. How does one go about this with the DNS-321?

Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

1) backup your data (in case something goes wrong)
2) use the web GUI to setup the new disks as RAID1
3) restore your data from the backup

You're done :)

Well if you using RAID1 it pretty easy even if you don't have the space on your PC to backup your data. Its RAID1 so remove on of the drives and connect it to your PC. Next access the DNS-321 and make sure your data is there on the single drive still just to be safe. Then go back to you PC and format it in NTFS to work as a drive on your PC. Now you have 500GB to backup the DNS-321 to your PC and move your data. Then just install your new drives into the DNS-321 and format. Now you have the data on your PC so just move it back you also still have it on the remaining drive from the RAID1 configuration to use in the DNS-321 if it is ever needed.

Can I pull one of my two RAID 1 configured Seagate 1Ts and put in a Seagate 1.5T let them sync,
then pull the remaining 1T and sync the second 1.5T with the first?
I'm assuming a lot of people want to do this as it sounds the simplest.

No.

Well, I guess you could do that, but it will not upgrade your disks to a 1.5TB RAID1.
When you put in the 1.5TB disk and create a RAID1 with the 1TB drive to "let them sync",
the web GUI will partition your 1.5TB disk into two partitions.  A 1TB partition (for RAID1
with the 1TB drive) and a .5 TB partition (for JBOD).
