DSM-520 AVI files freeze when playing
« on: March 09, 2009, 09:47:15 AM »

I notice recently that my 520 is starting to act up when I am playing normal movie files (AVI). It would freeze and then the unit become unresponsive or if it respond its seriously delayed.
Rebooting(pull the plug) occasionally fix it. Sometime at power on it would reboot a 2nd time.

It has the 1.06 FW. been on for a while. I see there is a 1.06.1 but I don't think it would help.

Anyone had this issue or could this just be my unit showing that its on its last leg?

Hard to say if your unit is on its last legs.

Have you had the AVI file for awhile and it started acting up?  What is the bit rate of the avi?  Are you playing through a network?  Wired or wireless?  If wireless, try wired.

Sometimes, if you hold the power button in for 5 seconds the unit will power down.  Save you from having to bend over to pull the plug.

You're right...1.06.1 is the same as 1.06.  It fixed problems for people who couldn't get 1.06 do to a bad path to the server.

Its happening on few of my AVI files that I know worked fine. I don't think its the files, the unit itself is showing strange things. Sometime when its rebooted the screen moves at a very slow pace.
When a movie freeze and I try to stop the playing or try to fast forward or just just power off (using the remote) it would start playing then freeze and then power off but in a very long delay sequence to the point where I have to just unplug the unit to start over.

My connection is wireless (never had a problem..since I got a new microwave)

I know I can press for 5 sec with the power button but I wanted to remove all current to circuits on the unit by unplugging it.

I really hope its not going bad....its worked well for me.
