Schedules and Access Control not working as expected
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:46:24 PM »

Hi, trying to set up a simple schedule for keeping the kids from staying up all night.  I'd had this working on a Linksys WRT54G till it bit the dust.  I just want it to block internet after midnight.

My problem is that the schedule is triggering the block unpredictably.

I created a schedule from 00:01 to 05:00, for all weekdays.  I then set up an Access Control rule that blocks all access for the MAC address using that schedule.  Once I save it, internet is blocked, even though the router time is not in the schedule window.

I noticed choosing only today (today is Wednesday, it was about 6pm), the block didn't go on.  I then selected just Thursday, and the block went on!

Is the schedule using GMT?  I setup a time server connection, made sure I had the right Time Zone, but it still behaved the same.

This is a new DIR-615, Hardware A2, Firmware 1.10NA.  No updates available on the web site.  Anyone else seen this?  Any ideas?  Any help would be welcome.

Thanks,
Steve

Is the time on the router set correctly?
Use an NTP server of time.nist.gov.

To set up scheduling:
1. Reserve device IP addresses ON the router under Setup/Networking.
2. Set up a schedule under Tools/Schedule on the routers web page. Customize your dates and times here.
3. Use Access Control under Advanced to apply the customized schedule to a policy and to the PC(s) desired to be controlled.

Thanks for your prompt response.

The router was telling me the time and time zone was correct, and I had put in time.nist.gov as an NTP server.  One thing I had not done was reboot the router, forgetting my rule that 60% of all problems are solved by shutting down and restarting.

When it came back up, the date and time were in 1969!

I changed the NTP Server to pool.ntp.org, and the time did reset correctly.  Experimenting with the schedule and access rules worked correctly as well, using it on my MAC address.  I didn't reserve an IP for the system, just entered the MAC, but I'll keep it in mind if things change.

Proof of solving it will come this weekend, I've set up a rule blocking the kids MAC address at midnight.

Thanks again,
Steve

So using time.nist.gov didn't work after resetting the router?

Let us know how it works out with the scheduling.

I had to set the time manually to get access control to work.  When I used the web service I was about 6 hours off.  When I set the time manually all began to work as expected.

You could set up the NTP time server option too, this should keep the time correct.
