No Internet Connection
« on: January 27, 2012, 09:56:47 AM »

My DIR-655 has worked for 2 years, but can no longer access the internet. My ISP is  (Rockbridge Global Village -sub of Ntelos) and my modem is a Zhone. My connection type is DHCP, QoS is set to active, and the IP address boxes are not being filled in. The cables check out ok and there is no problem connecting to the internet if I bypass the DIR-655 and connect direct to the modem. Hardware is A4 with firmware 1.21

Nothing has changed in the house with regards to new cordless phones or wireless devices and I am using the same Zhone modem. I have tried returning to factory defaults and reconfiguring.

What should I try next?

I would see if the ISP modem logs have been exhibiting any disconnections. This will lead most people to think the router is at fault.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model # do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I have the same issue with no Internet connection messages. I was online wirelessly about a month ago and the connection dropped (it had been working fine for months and no changes were made to anything: one minute I was online, the next I wasn't).

After several hours on the phone with Verizon and D-link support, DLink support concluded that it was a hardware problem and said I could return the router to them for a replacement. That replacement came this week and after spending another 4 hours with support the past 2 days, I am exactly where I was a month ago - no wi-fi.

Not looking for any suggestions of settings to change -- in the 10-12 hours I have spent with tech support in the past month, I have changed dozens of settings at their requests and nothing has helped.

Really looking more for advice as to what to do next - I figured if that many hours of tech support from the manufacturer can't help me, I may just be better off junking this router and buying a new one from another company and seeing if that gets me back online.

Would be curious if anyone had a long-term problem like this that was tough to resolve but eventually it did get fixed? I don't want to to give up too soon but today they wanted to send me a THIRD router, saying the new one they sent me much have the same hardware defect as the the one I returned and no...that's just not likely. Any helpful feedback on whether I should continue trying to resolve this issue (4 weeks on) or bail and try another router would be appreciated. Thanks.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Thank you for trying to help but as I said in my original note, not looking for any advice on settings to change or anything -- all that has been done and done multiple times, at the direction of DLink support.

Try factory reset.
Try updating to recent FW version located on the DLink web site.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

If your unwilling to try some of the suggestions or let someone help you then I recommend that you find other alternatives to your problem.

@realmc
Any status on your situation?

Here's what I have done to date along with answers to several of your questions:
1. I can't get into the Zhone modem (model 6211-13ADSL2) until ISP is back after the weekend - I don't have the PW or address. I do know it is a router/modem combo, but it worked fine for the past two years with the same setup. The loss of connection happened after the ISP was off line for three days with equipment problems at the telephone switch that provides DSL service to my area. During that 3 day time period I rebooted the router and modem multiple times as we were getting inter-mitten service. That event may be coincidental, because the first thing I did was ask the ISP to check my connection and their equipment says everything is fine.

2. As mentioned above my service is DSL. I have 1 PC wired to the DIR-655 on ch 1, one laptop connected wireless, and one stereo receiver connected wireless. The security setting is WPA-Personal and the unit is set to n, g, and b mode (I have already tried the other options with no success). The DNS IP addresses are not being filled out in Setup/Internet/Manual.

3. I tried your various suggestions, but nothing has worked so far.

I would recommend testing the modem out with the PC directly connected to the modem and bypass the router for a while. See if you notice any of the same thing happening. Modems can do the same thing and of course users will look at the router first rather then look at the modem.

I would have the ISP make sure the phone lines and signal to the modem is in good condition as well when they get back. Might ask for a new modem too to be sure.

I can and have been connecting directly to the modem without a problem. The phone lines could be an issue.

Had ISP check signal to modem and that is not the problem. Next, I pulled out a Linksys WRT54GX4 that I had in storage to test and it works great. In fact, the range is 25% greater than I ever achieved with the DIR-655 and the web-base setup is quicker. Problem solved - will use the Linksys.

Thanks for the help.
