MAC Filtering Blocks Allowed Devices After Several Hours
« on: January 28, 2012, 07:14:40 AM »

I have yet another problem now with the DIR-825.  I have a DAP-1522 that I connect my multimedia devices to like my TV, BD player, etc.

For added security, I use MAC filtering to only allow access to my devices that connect to my router.  However, after several hours, the devices connected to my DAP-1522 can no longer connect and neither can I connect to them.  The odd thing is that I can connect just fine to the 1522 itself.  I NEVER had this issue with the DIR-655 so I figured it had to be the 825.  After trying several things, I essentially narrowed it down to the MAC filtering.

If I turn MAC filtering off everything works fine all the time.  If I turn it on, everything works fine for several hours, even up to a whole day, but then eventually my devices can no longer see or be seen.  My laptop is my other wireless device and it has no issues like this.

I already started a support incident with D-Link support but was wondering if anyone else has already run into this issue?  If you have and resolved it, would you kindly share the solution please?  Many thanks.

Do you have reserved IP addreses ON the router for ALL devices?

Yes I do.  As a matter of fact, that occurred to me later after the post and decided to remove the reservations temporarily.  So far it's working fine.  However, I did NOT have this issue at all with the DIR-655.  Why would the 825 not be able to handle my configuration as it was set up on the 655?

The reason I went in this direction is because, on the status page for wireless, I noticed that the IP and MAC did NOT match when coming from the DAP-1522.  That made no sense to me.  So that made me thing that it's got to be the reservations because they have a specific IP linked to a MAC address.  Why would the 825 not recognize the correct MAC/IP combination when the 655 had no issues?  The DAP-1522 is set up to clone the MAC of the device making the request so all requests coming from whatever device would have the MAC along with their IP.

Like I said, the configuration had worked flawlessly with the 655.  Man, the 825 just seems to have many strange issues that are better handled by the 655.  They should have taken the 655 and built on top of it a 5GHz feature.  In my experience, the version of the 655 I have just works great.

Anyhow, for now, disabling the reservations on the devices connected to the DAP-1522 seems to have solved this in the short term.

I would presume that there is an interaction or difference in the way the DAP handles traffic. I've noticed that someone mentioned that the DAP doesn't something different for it's connected devices. I'm just not sure. You have more experience with the DAP as I don't have one, yet. Sounds like this might be resolution for this configuration using these 2 units. Is the rest of the devices set up for reserved thats not connected to the DAP? I presume they should be ok.

Yes, the hard-wired and wireless NOT connect to the DAP work just fine.  I don't think the issue is with the DAP since I did not have this problem with the DIR-655.  I would think it's how the 825 is handling the incoming packets?

You know, I just thought of something that IS different.  Do you think the DAP would behave different using the 5GHz frequency as opposed to 2.4?  I would think not in the case of how it treats the devices.  Aside from the router, that's the only difference between how the DAP communicated with the 655, i.e., using 2.4GHz where now I'm using the 5GHz by connecting to my 5G SSID on the 825.

Only way to test that would be to put the 825 in 2.4mode with the DAP.  ???

I'm having the same issue for last 3 months with MAC filtering, but have only been using 2.4 GHz.
I have reservations for all the devices as well.
If I turn MAC filtering and then on again, It works (as you say) for a day or two.
I have approx 15 devices in my reservation list and MAC filtering list, and on any given day I have 2-3 devices that can't connect.
I'm sick of resetting the router.
I'm very close to going out to purchase a different brand of router.
If there is another firmware fix in the works, it would be nice to know what and when, so us consumers can make informed tech and business decisions.
Thanks

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

After setting up the IP reservations, then set up Mac Filtering and any scheduling if you have set up scheduling as well.

>Turn off ALL QoS / Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only)
DONE, traffic shaping was enabled

> Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
DONE, was turned on

> Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
NO ACTION, was already on

> Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
> Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
NO ACTION, this was already done, except for one device with static IP outside DNS IP range

> Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
DONE

> Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
DONE

> After setting up the IP reservations, then set up Mac Filtering
NO ACTION, Mac filtering was left as it was

> and any scheduling if you have set up scheduling as well.
NO ACTION, not using scheduling

Now I'll begin to monitor performance and report back with findings, might take a few days or more.

So this morning I have at least two devices which can't get connected to the DNS servers, seems to be the same issue as before. Open to all suggestions on solving this problem. Maybe I need to set up my christmas lights timer to turn of the router for 1 hour every day, as an auto reboot.

Does disabling the MAC Filtering stop this problem?
One thing I would do would be to reload the same code again and this time don't load any saved configuration file and set the router up from scratch.

Use the FW update sticky process when you do this.

I have a 3rd party A/P and a DIR-825. I use MAC filtering and looking at the logs it looked like the DNS was not working so I put the IP info in the devices and I have not had a problem since(7-8 months).

The only devices that really gave me a problem where my Android phones though.

The darnedest thing, if you reset it, everything works for hours-days then after that you can't pull an IP address on the client. All of my devices had reserved IP's in the Dir-825 also. I was always resetting my router and A/P.

I thought is was the cheap Chinese A/P, but maybe not. Going direct to the Dir-825 I do not have that problem though. I use 5Ghz on my Android quite often without a hitch directly to the Dir-825 (the cheap A/P is only 2.4Ghz).

Hope that helps,

Pat

Furry,

I disabled the MAC filtering yesterday with the same thought.
I'll let it run for a week, then report back.

I did restore my config after upgrading the firmware.
I'll try a cleanly entered config and report back.

Thanks
