Problem with router
« on: February 01, 2012, 07:45:23 PM »

I installed this router a few days ago, and have been encountering an intermittent problem.  Several times a day, the router will partially stop working.  Any connections (online games, downloads, skype) that were working prior to an incident will continue to work; however, browsing the internet, or using new programs do not work.
Each incident lasts anywhere from 5-15 minutes.

Another problem, (unrelated or not) is my desktop connected to the router is currently is unable to connect to the internet at all.  Web browsers say the connection is interrupted or reset.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What Hardware version is your router?       B1
What Firmware version is currently loaded?    2.00NA

What ISP Service do you have?          Time Warner Cable
What ISP Modem do you have?          Stand alone
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?   Terayon TJ715

Some things to try:

What wireless modes are you using?      Mixed G and N.  One laptop has N, one has G.
What security mode are you using?       WPA2 and AES
What wireless devices do you have connected?   2 laptops
Any cordless house phones?         yes
Any other WiFi routers in the area?       There are 4.  Mine and one other are on channel 6.  The other 2 are on channel 1.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Do not see an option for Extra Wireless Protection.  Others have been turned off

Resetting the router to factory settings and applying the settings above has allowed the router to work for now.  Will update if the intermittent problem returns.

The problem still persists.  I've noticed that it happens fairly often after first turning on my laptop.  Everything will work fine for a couple minutes, but then suddenly I can reach IP addresses but not host names.  Rebooting/Power Cycling the router seems to fix the problem.

Does this happen if you go wired with your LT?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

I haven't tried going wired with the laptop, but prior to the factory reset the other day, I was told the desktop had similar problems.

Would be interesting to see if the LT does the same. Would indicate there is a problem regardless of wired or wireless.

Any log entries on the router when this happens?
Do you have log access for the modem, would be helpful if we could see if the modem is exhibiting this and the end result is causing the router to loose connections.

Let us know if you want to try teamviewer.

This is a log of the router around the last time it happened.  I'm not entirely sure exactly when it occurred, as I don't remember because the router time was set wrong (and it's been fixed but now the log is cleared.  This was saved prior to resetting the time correctly.)

I have no idea how to access the log for the modem or if I even have access to it.
I'm ok with teamviewer, I've never used it and just installed it.

Coincidentally enough, the problem started right after the teamviewer session ended and lasted ~3 minutes.
The Router log showed this right around when it started, and nothing else after:
info   Feb 3 15:12:27    UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.0.102

I've been assuming the problem is a router problem because it started the day that I installed the DIR-655. (I bought a new router because the previous router did not have as good range and was wireless-g only)

Upgrade FW using the sticky process and lets see if that helps.

Think a SB 6121 would be good too.

Haven't had any problems in the past few days after changing the router's DNS settings.
