Hello,
I've been racking my brain trying to get set up for a few days when I discovered this forum, hope someone here will be able to help.
Im living in Ecuador until July. I rented an apartment thats connected to the internet via an ethernet cable that drops from the owners place above mine. This cable comes from a d-link switcher thats fed from a cable modem.
We can get online by hooking the DIR-615 straight to the cable modem upstairs, but the walls are so thick that the signal is weak getting to my place.
So im back trying to get online via the switched line at my place.

Im on a mac, and going System Preferences -> Network, I get the following info on the Ethernet connection going straight from the switch to the mac (this all gets configured automatically):

Status: Connected
Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 192.168.0.102.
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP

IP Address: 192.168.0.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 200.124.224.195, 200.124.224.196
Search Domains: cpe.gye.telmex.ec.intranet

Any help, ideas, whatever would be greatly appreciated...
thanks!

Is there a host router between the cable modem and switch up stairs? What other devices are connected to the switch upstairs?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Preferred internet connections between devices is as follows:
ISP Modem>Host Router(or DIR-615)>network switch><wired PCs to switch.
                                                 ><wireless connects to host wifi router if any.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

>Is there a host router between the cable modem and switch up stairs?
No, as it is right now, its just the cable modem to the switch.

>What other devices are connected to the switch upstairs?
Just a PC as far as I know.

>What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Im not sure just now, Ill check when the landlord shows up.

>Preferred internet connections between devices is as follows:

Thats what im afraid of... is it even possible to do what I want to do? ie, go:
ISP Modem>network switch>Host Router(or DIR-615)

thanks!

not really, the modem can only hand out one IP address at a time. So it could be done however the router would have to be OFF while anything connected to the switch was ON. When that goes off then your router could be turned on.

I would ask him if you can run the cable from the modem to the 615 then run a cable from the 615 router to the switch up stairs for his use. If he's sharing the internet with you, this is possible, just need to place the 615 between the modem and switch.

Might try a DAP model device from DLink, it's an AP that provides wireless and out any router abilities.

DAP-1360, 1522 or 1525.
