Help! Trouble formatting drive
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:05:25 PM »

Hi,

Please help, I'm far from a pro at this stuff!

I'm having trouble formatting my drive in my new DNS-320.  I installed a 1.5TB Western Digital drive, model WD15EADS.  I have an identical second one that I would like to add and run as Raid 1.  However, I'd like to format the first drive, copy the data over, then add the second drive to be mirrored.

Each time I try formatting this first drive (the only one installed at this point) with the D-Link setup utility, I run into an error.  The first time I tried formatting, the utility just locked up before it showed any format status.  The second time, it initialized the drive, formatted all the way to 100%, then just locked up.  The third time I tried, It made it to 98%, then gave me this error message:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Can someone please tell me what's going on?  Like I said, I'm not a guru at this stuff.  Thanks so much for your help!

If you search the forum others had same (myself included) You have to take out the existing drive and let it format the drive on its own. Cant remember if it needed to be in one or the other slot but it eventually worked after doing this.

Skip the CD setup and use the NAS webUI instead.

Hi,
If you are still having trouble formatting your drive, try pulling it out and use disk manager in a windows machine and delete all volumes / partitions.  Then reinsert the drive in the right side of your 320 if you want to do it your way.  A simpler method might be to do the same delete the volumes and insert both disks and start up your 320.  I would use the web gui as albert suggests instead of the cd and try your Raid 1 setup that way.
I would also recommend that you consider just using 2 standard drives and use the local backup function to backup one drive to the other.  You can schedule one or more backups during the day without any of the risks or complications of using RAID 1.
Take a look at this link before you decide, http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42033.0 ,but if you do use standard volumes, do first one then the other in the right side of the 320.   Good luck

Thank you all!  Cable2, that was a great article on the differences between RAID 1 and local backups!  I am definitely going to use 2 standard drives with local backups now.  Thanks for saving me from some potential headaches!

Once I get home tonight, I will try wiping the drive on a Windows machine then formatting it in the right bay.  Once that's formatted, I will copy the data from my external drive onto the DNS 320, then install the external into the 320 and schedule backups onto that.  If I'm doing anything wrong here, please stop me! :)

I'll post an update this evening once I'm done.

Using the Web UI is WAY better than the CD!!  I put the disk into the Right bay and the format worked perfectly this time.

Thanks again!

Hi again,
Remember, you may have to pull the first drive out of the right slot until you get the second formatted.  And you could do that and have both drives setup before adding your data.  Either way should work.  Good luck

Okay.  I'm working on transferring the data from the external HDD.  It's going pretty slowly (about 600-800 kb/s right now). I have the external connected to the USB port of the DNS 320, but I have a feeling the data is flowing from the external hard drive connected to the 320, through my laptop and then back to the 320.  Does this make sense?  Is there any way to speed the transfer up?

As soon as this next transfer completes, I'm going to try plugging my laptop into my router via ethernet and see if that speeds things along.

Once I get the data transferred from the external HDD to the internal right bay drive, I'm planning to do these steps:
1. Remove the right bay drive
2. Pull the external hard drive from it's case and insert it into the left bay
3. Format the new left bay drive
4. Put the right bay drive back in
5. Backup the right bay's data to the new left bay drive

Will this work?

Thanks again for teaching this newbie!

Hi again,
The drive connected to the USB port is not going through your laptop, it is slow, period.  Patience is a real virtue, some things can't be rushed.  The first backup will also be slow and the performance of the 320 will also be slower while this is happening.  If you wanted to try and use the laptop to copy data to the 320, you should have tried it first, but I don't know if this is dramatically faster or not.  You would have to assign the 320 a static IP first too.  I would not bother now.
Regarding installing the 2nd drive, you could try different methods, but the one that will work for sure is to do the delete volumes thing in windows and insert the drive in the right side until it is formatted and then simply switch it to the left side and reinsert the original in the right side.  You will then be ready to setting up the local backup of Volume 1 to Volume 2.  This will probably take as long as the USB did, but in another day or two you will have what you wanted, schedule your local backups and don't forget to check the incremental backup box, so just your new data will be backed up....much faster and highly recommended.
You can use the NAS while the backup is happening, buy you may get some stuttering or such while trying to stream a video or whatever.  This will pass.  Be patient and then enjoy.  Good luck

Perfect explanation.  Thanks Cable!  I'll let you know how it works out once it's all done.  Should be a few more days!  :)
