Connection uptime error, DHCP crash?
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:05:13 PM »

Hi,

First of all i do not have that much know how within this field (Although i work for an ISP)

There seems to be a problem with my DIR-655.

#1. As we speak the router is taking down and setting up the connection about 1-2 times pr. minute!
the connection uptime is stuck in a infinite loop: 1.12 sec, 1.13, 1.14 and back to 1.12 sec.
It comes back from time to time. but this is the second time this have happened.

#2. The router seems to be scared of being toughed. If someting at all touches it, the connection goes
down Not like you loose wireless or the cable pops out, it acctually shuts the connection off.
(Network Status : Disconnected. - Connection uptime N/A)

3#. We have the network set up with a Modem (ZyXEL P2812). In Bride mode.
Then 1 DIR-635 and then the DIR-655 (Separate ports, not as accsess point)
The DIR-635 seems to NOT have this problem.

That said, this is in Norway. And we recieve 2 Public IP's from Telenor.

#4. The problem about the router disconnecting it really an all-the-time problem. This happens daily.
Restarting router doesnt help most the time. It connects when it want to, and sometimes its gone for
     hours.

    Current Firmware Version :   2.00   Date :   12, Aug, 2010
(No idea why the date is wrong)
Now, this is the Euro version and i cant seem to find a update for it.

If there is any threads already on this, i am sorry. Also sorry for my bad English.

This is my 2nd D-link DIR-655 and ashamed to say that the above problem (#2) is not the first time.

Thanks in advance for any awnsers!

Let me know what more info you need.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

How are the 635 and the 655 connected to the modem? In tandem to ports in back or switch?
Most setups are as follows:
ISP Modem>Router><devices and APs.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

Oops!

The page you requested is not available.

Suggestions:

Make sure your internet cable is securely connected to the internet port on your router, and your internet LED is blink green or blue.
Check to make sure that the Internet settings on your router are set correctly, such as your PPPoE username/password settings.
The DNS server may be down at the moment, please contact your ISP or try again later.

Disabling QoS dident help, sofar. (Still losing connection all the time so sorry for slow reply)

Manual setup is OK.

DNS Relay is on (Was on)

Its set up like you said: ISP Modem>Router><devices and APs

Hardware B1

Dont have Advance DNS service, though something called Unicasting (if that matters)

Reserved IP's on Devices.

Endpoint Independent set (was set already)

uPnP and Multicast was on (i've set it before casue of games)

That said :

Problem #1 seems that the router is reebooting, cause of this message :

The gateway is currently measuring your Connection bla bla, it dissappeared now. BUT thats the message i get several times a minute.

Reserved IP's on Devices. I hightly recommend reserving IP addresses for device ON the router, not the devices them selves.

Is this a DSL ? If so, what is the MTU set at? Try 1492 or 1472? I would call the ISP and ask for MTU speed. I presume the 655 is handling the PPPoE connection or is it a DHCP connection?
Is Always ON selected under PPPoE if your using this mode?

Curious, I only see Rev A FW for your region listed. This is a unit bought in your region?

Sorry for being an moron i ment "reserved IP's on the router" not devices :)

Guess its DSL (30 Mbit) the MTU is set to 1500 Dafault. Testsing the suggestions now.
Cant call ISP now, its nighttime in Norway, have to do it on monday.

Its DHCP connection, not PPPoE.

I know, its wierd. Googled my ass off and i cant find that version 2.00 FW (B1) is even for Euro devices.

Its bought in Norway yes.

(Lost connection/reboot 3 times since last post)

This havent been a problem before (#1)

I've reset the router to factory settings and still no use. It still "reboots" and the connection uptime is stuck in a infinite loop like i said eariler (#1).

Can this be caused by:

We get 2 public IP's from our ISP. Though at the modem, im not acctually sure if there might be a comupter connected directly to it. (Would that cause a problem with the IP's)

This modem is at the 3rd floor (My landlord) and the dlink dir635 is his router and its right beside the modem. My router is in 1st floor.

If you dont have anything that can help regarding DHCP i guess i can conclude that there is a hardware/software error and it needs to be replaced?

BTW, my PS3 and Laptop, both wireless.

My PS3 is listed as DHCP Client, in setup -> Network but not my laptop.
And in status -> Device info my laptop is listed under Lan Computers but not my PS3, why?

Have you any update on this issue?

So you get 2 public IP addresses from the ISP and you and your land lord have 2 routers, and only one modem? Is your 655 connected to his router?

Im sorry for the slow reply, and thank you so much for help so far.
i havent had time lately and havent been home so no status.

Btw, resetting the router to factory settings did help! a bit.. the time between the "shutdowns" got longer.

As we speak i am home and th problem is back, we havent made any changes and my girlfriends say that it have worked a while now without problems.

(just got connection back, been up for 10 min.)

Have used an hour to post this sofar..

I monitored the Status page for som time and it seems that it drops randomly and sometimes only with 10-20 sec inbetween..

What happens : http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/252/dlink.png/

Its OK now, if it goes down again i will capture a video and post link.

Yes, we get 2 IP's and we have separate routers, both are connected to separate ports on the ISP modem. (His DIR-635 does not seem to have this problem)

But again, could this be a problem IF there is a PC connected directly to the modem by cable? (since we only have 2 IP's)

Thanks for help :)

It's possible that something in interrupting the data from the modem to the 655 router. I would try this, disconnect everything including the other router. Leave the 655 router connected and then connect everything to the 655 and see if the router still looses the connected. I would also check the ISP Modems logs for any log entries for problems as well. Could be a ISP modem issue too. Both routers are connected simultaneously to the ISP Modem?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Those files are read by the router for information regarding configuration information. They are used only by the router.

Its ZyXEL P2812 delivered/configurated by Telenor(Norway)

Yes, both routers in separate ports, (1 & 2) not like mine is a "accsess point"
casue we have tested it and that dident work at all.

I will test this tomorrow, cause i dont have time at the moment :(

(Might also post a problem that this is random, and i would have to wait for it to drop)
