How to bridge a Westell 327W to a D-link DIR-655
« on: February 14, 2012, 06:58:07 AM »

I'd greatly appreciate anyone's help is clarifying how to bridge from a Westell VersaLink 327W (b90-327w15-06) to a D-link DIR-655.  I'm doing this in hopes of increasing the range of the wireless signal (and the speed as well). I've tried various steps that I've found on the web but none have been successful in establishing a bridge so any suggestions or steps anyone might have would be more than welcome.  Thanks in advance.

Need to contact your ISP and have them help you bridge the ISP modem.
On the 655 router, if your ISP is using PPPoE for the connection then log into the 655s web page and user Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection Type, select PPPoE from the drop down menu. You'll need your ISP acct information and password. Also make sure ALWAYS ON is selected.

Thanks for your reply!  I'll follow-up with Frontier but since they've taken over for Verizon things seem to have taken a turn for the worse in terms of our dsl performance but hopefully their customer service dept will be better.

One thing you can do if you can't get the Modem bridged, use the Modems DMZ if it has that option for the IP address that the 655 gets.   ::)

Keep us posted.  ;)

I called into Frontier to discuss the bridging issue.  I happened to mention the slow DSL speeds and they ran a test and said we had issue with the line so they needed to resolve that first.  In the process, they found that I still had the 327W and therefore sent me a new Westell 7500 that would possibly help with the DSL speed (which according to speedtest.net it didn't).  The plus is that with the 7500, I was able to easily bridge to the DIR-655.  This allowed me to hook into the D-link from our personal laptop and nook without any problem.  My work laptop was also able to log onto it when security was off.  Once I turned on WEP, our personal laptop and nook continue to work once we entered the key, but my work laptop will connect to the 655 (again, after entering the key) but as I have to go thru VPN to be able to log onto work, it will repeatedly set a 429 error (unable to resolve server address).  I've tried everything I can possibly think of or have read about online but nothing has yet to get me around the 429 error.  Any suggestions?  Would it be better to post this question separately?  Thx again for your help!

Glad you got the ISP Modem resolved.

Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.

Might have to set up some sort of VPN forwarding rules. Most VPNs are passive thru the router, however you'll need to consult with the VPN provider with this and see if router configuration is needed or not.
