645 loses Wi Fi connections
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:29:24 AM »

Applied latest firmware but wi-fi phones and laptops lose connections.  On Android phones, turning Wi-Fi on and off will re-gain wifi connection for awhile but will be dropped within 15 minutes.  Laptop requires more screwing around with to regain connection but within about 15 minutes will lose wi-fi again.  Everything else on the LAN is screaming.

I do have newer cordless phone nearby, as well as AT&T micro cell tower.  I have messed with channels, mixed modes, everything I can think of.  I am pretty network savy but the routers 1/3 of the price of this one aren't having this issue.

One thing I havne't tried is turning off AT&T micro cell and cordless phone to see if wi-fi is dropped - but what if that turns out to fix it - I need to get different cordless phone?  I need the micro cell so my cell phones work in my home.

Not sure what to try.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Put the MC in the DMZ. I have one as well.

I'm not in front of my router - but it was latest firmware .01 I think.  I live in remote area so security is wide open, no other wi-fi available.

I do have fancy cordless phone nearby - what is my option there - I can move phone to other end of house but if signal is interfereing how will that help?  I never interfered with other D-Link or Netgear WI-FI - does this new router have more dislikes with cordless phones?

I will try the couple other settings you spoke of - but near ready to throw in the towel.  I really liked this router other wise.

It's possible the cordless phone could interfere. What frequency does it run?

There is a beta FW however lets try some of the suggestions first before going there.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Will have to check phone type when I get home.

I use Comcast - get awesome 30 mgb d/l speeds.  Again will check modem type when I return home.

I see you mention Teamviewer to view settings - is that something you might do?  Wouldn't it be easier to just give someone the web interface password to review router settings?

I do and can help via teamviewer. Lets try some of the settings, if it still doesn't fix, send me a PM with ID and PW.

THANK YOU FURRYNUTZ!

FurryNutz logged onto my router and added all my devices to "Reserved DHCP IP List by MAC address" - and this seemed to fix most of my Wi-Fi instability issues.

My AT&T Micro Cell tower started to work right once he added that particular IP/MAC to DMZ.

My laptop is old and has USB FOB for Wi-Fi (the built in wi-fi stopped working with Win 7 upgrade - only way to get it working was with Realtex USB FOB).  I still had problems with laptop even after reserving IP by MAC address on router - with this one I also had to make IP on laptop static.  Something I had tried early on in this exercise that hand't helped - but now it fires up every time - so it wanted reserved on router and static on laptop as far as I can tell.

My OBION device ATA (used for Google voice free landline) works flawless as well, iphones, droids, blu-ray players, etc - all working.

Somewhat frustrating experience - all these devices worked by default router settings with older router - so not sure why the need to tinker with this 645.

Again - much Kudos to FurryNutz for taking time to log onto my network.

You should be able to just reserve that IP address on the router for this device then set the LT for automatic networking.

Glad it's all working. Once you get it finally finished. Save off the routers configuration to file. Under Tools/System. Name it in the following example: 20120214DIR645RevAv101 So this by looking at the file name you can see the date generated, model, Rev and Firmware version it came from.

Enjoy. ;D
