determining speed of WAN port on DGL-4500
« on: February 14, 2012, 04:34:28 PM »

Hi all,

I'm on the Shaw network using the "Broadband 100" package I am using a DGL-4500 Gamer Lounge Router and a DLink - DGS-1016D 16 port Gigabit Switch.   My Shaw modem is a DOCSIS 3.0 (Motorola SB6120)

Until Sunday my "Link" light was BLUE (and potentially flashing) on my Shaw modem.  After a visit from Shaw on Sunday to fix an outdoor line problem and an indoor check on my levels and assurances that my "problem had been fixed"  my link light is now orange(red?) Flashing.

I contacted shaw and was told that "the SB6120 operates in either a single-channel mode, or the higher speed 'bonded' mode"  - and that the flashing orange light was indicative of this slower speed. They suggested it was something at my end...
Once I downloaded the 6120 Manual I realized that - "Amber: A device, computer or hub, is connected via the Ethernet (10Base-T) or Fast Ethernet (100Base-T) port    Blue: High-speed Gigabit Ethernet connection  from SB6120 to your PC"

I have signed into my 4500 multiple times and can only find one reference to WAN port speed - AUTO or in my case 1000 MBPS.  I have rebooted multiple times and reset this setting to either.  (each time unplugging my modem)  When ever I startup everything again...there is that flashing light telling me I'm only connected at 100 MBPS...

Any advice?  This used to work flawlessly...

I have no way to determine if the 4500 is even setting the WAN to 1000 MBPS ...

Thanks in advance!

p.s. Happy Valentines Day :)

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
YOu can manually set the WAN port speed on the 4500 to 1000Mb.
I presume you have the devices connecting in the following manor?
SB6120>4500>Gb switch<>devices to switch.

Yes the Blue WAN link light should be blue for the modem to router link. The DOWN link for the modem from ISP will be blue too if the ISP network lets the modem bond. You might see an UP link blue to if your ISP supports bonding on the UP.

BTW the Motorola SB 6 series modems are great, I have 3 models including yours.

OMG...
The cable was the culprit!!!  After years of doing this I keep getting stumped by stupid things like cables...
Flashing BLUE is what I like to see :)

Thanks for the suggestion - I still wonder how on earth a simple cable can go without so much as a prod.

Back in business!
Enjoy your night all!

It's the littlest things that get us.  :P
Cat6 is recommended. Good stuff.

Enjoy.

I just hope they don't keep upgrading cables as often as OS and HW. Hard to upgrade cable wires that are already built in a house or an Apt. Java's got Cat5 in his Apt. Going to have to run Cat6 around the place here soon.  ;D

Can you use a cat6 patch cable instead of cat 5e patch cable even if rest of the house is cat5e?
