Re: New DIR-655: wireless Internet occasionally drops out
« Reply #15 on: December 26, 2012, 10:04:37 AM »

Hi, I came across this string while searching why my DIR-655 (HW: A1/A2 FW: 1.21) started dropping wireless clients when I closed the lid of my laptop to let it sleep.  9 wireless devices all dropped at the same time and then slowly reconnected.

I checked the router’s log and found, "...disconnected for reason: Authentication Failed", for each device.  The entry just before those was from my laptop, "...UDP timeout:-1 'Teredo'".  So I searched for that meaning and did some experiments based on my findings.  Disabling IP v6 did not solve it, but it did allow a Skype entry to appear in the log as a timeout.  I tried exiting Skype first before letting the computer sleep and it seems to have stopped the wireless client dropping.  I re-enabled IP v6 and it still was OK.  So, if Skype was ever running when my laptop computer went to sleep, all wireless clients lost connection.

Now this is an assumption on my part, but it seems the router is resetting the wireless connection in an effort to keep from losing the Skype connection.  Could it be Skype, or my laptop, is not communicating correctly to the router that it’s sleeping and the router gets confused and performs a wireless reset?  Maybe this issue is somehow common to others in this thread.

I will pursue the Skype issue further and repost to this thread if anyone responds with interest to my efforts and conclusions.

If you could provide some feedback and try some of the suggesions listed in post #10 and let us know if any of that helps:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=46460.msg171927#msg171927

I would also make sure that the one devices WiFi drivers are up to date if there are any.
I would recommend that you completely power OFF and unplug any power adapters and batteries if you can, from all devices and let them sit for 1 minute. Then power them back up and test.

Turn off WiFi security temporarily on the 655 as a test to see if the behavior persists.
Disable any and all 3rd party security SW on the devices as a test.
How many other WiFi routers are near by?
Has a factory reset been performed?

Fuzzy, I looked at buckyswider's reply #10 and I did not pickup on what you were referring to.  I am running only the DIR-655, no extenders, and I have a Motorola SB5101 on Comcast.  There are other wireless networks, but none over 2 bars.  My mobile phone is Dect 6.0

I did just install the latest 6/3/12 15.2.0.19 drivers for my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 Wi-Fi adapter.  Then tested by closing the lid.  My son's xBox stuttered, but did not kill the game.  I tried again with Skype off and no effect at all to the game.  I'll try the power cycling and other power suggestions when my boys are off xBox Live.

Below is a portion of Tuesday's log that starts with my laptop sleeping and ending with (top) my son's MacBook Air losing connection.  I noticed Skype (on my laptop) and my laptop show different ports.

Oops. I meant port #14, sorry. Please try some of the suggestions there and let us know what the settings are and if any of the suggestions help.

Please review the form sticky about ComCast DNS since you have ComCast.

Haha, definitely wasn't me offering helpful advice  :) .

Now that this is bumped, I guess I should finally followup on my issue.  The (old) router kept intermittently dropping; I replaced with the new DIR-655 and all is well.  So it seems like it was definitely a hardware issue.  I almost bought another new one just last week, since I was having routing issues that I couldn't figure out and I remembered about this past hardware flakiness.  that one ended up being an "interesting" fix that I should post in another thread for discussion's sake...

Fuzzy, I performed a "paper clip" factory reset and then restored to my saved config.
So far my sleep tests do not effect other wireless clients' connections.

Seems to be solved, thank you!

The forum sticky about Comcast DNS has a link to nowhere, so I was unable to follow up with that.
Now if I could just get the SharePort to work, all could be good.  Is there a post thread for that?

Glad the factory reset and restore config worked.

I see that ComCast has changed there web site and seems the link to that DNS Opt Out form is now broke and no longer working. I'll look in to this and see if I can get the link updated. It had to do with something similar to Dlink Advanced DNS services. I think ComCast has something going on with routing DNS traffic thru there services and this was inpacting how DLink routers were working on this particular ISP. The link recommended that users could disable there DNS help services on a web site so any and all DNS traffice was handled normally with out any additional DNS routing help which seemed to be effected how DLink routers were working when connected to ComCast systems.

I'll see if I can find the info.

What version of SP are you using? What devices are you trying to use with SP? Have you installed SP v4 yet?

Fuzzy, thank you for the DNS fix link.  I will check it out when I have some time.
BTW, I am using OpenDNS.org for DNS filtering if that impacts anything here.

SharePoint is v4.11 downloaded from the DIR-835 link in your new version post.
My test was a SanDisk 1GB ThumbDrive and an old HP PSC 1210xi USB printer.

I was testing on mine before I attempted setting up my father's for a shared printer.
He is out of state and I access his network with TeamViewer, so I wanted a dry run.
Glad I tried on mine first, because nothing showed up in the SharePoint view window.

I suggest if possible, Power OFF the router and USB device your trying to connect. Plug in the device and power it one, then power ON the router and let it boot.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Firewall programs while testing. Reboot the PC that SP is installed on while the router comes to ready. Then run SP. The router should be detected and see along with attached USB device.

Ensure the PC has a reserved IP address on the router as well.

The router is still using v1.21 FW?

Furry, I unplugged the router and attached my SanDisk Cruzer 1GB thumbdrive, then plugged in the router.  I woke up my laptop and ran SharePort 4.11, still could not see the drive.  I disabled Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials, still could not see the drive.  For kicks, I changed the "My plug of USB type is:" to WCN Configuration and rebooted the router, ran SharePort, still could not see the drive.

No other security is on my computer.  The router is HW A1 and FW 1.21.  When I click the firmware Check Now button, it reports I have the latest version from 2008/10/09  The thumbdrive is not running any login security, it opens right up when plugged into my laptop.  All devices on my network have reserved addresses and the address range is set to only those devices.

Do you still have the installation CD for your router by chance? You might want to un-install v4 and install the version that came with your router. Seen various issues with people trying to use SP on v1.xx FW. I know my Rev B router with 2.xx FW works pretty good with SP v4. Unfortunately that version wont upgrade an Rev A router, sorry.  ::)

Hello all.  I'm new to this forum.  I've owned the DIR-655 for a few years now.  I have the latest FW (2.10) and Hardware Version B1.  Until recently, the DIR-655 has been rock solid.  However, recently I've experienced the SAME issues as everyone on this forum.  My wireless connectivity drops for unknown reasons.  The wireless signal is still there (I can see it with inSSIDer), but all PCs disconnect and indicate "identifying network".  Oddly, Android phones and iPhones sometimes remain connected, but my Windows Vista, 7, and 8 laptops lose connections.  I usually have to unplug the router to get it to come back on.  This is frustrating!!!  I've tried messing with all settings and all the suggestions made thus far.  The one thing I haven't tried is the factory reset.  Is that the only solution to the above problems???

PS:  Has anyone experienced a problem with the LAN cables not "clicking in" to the LAN ports on the DIR-655?  Some of my LAN cables will not click in and sometimes fall out.  Any solutions to this problem?

Link>Welcome!
What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?
What FW version was previously loaded? What was the reason for updating to v2.10?
Was the router working before the update?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Try different cables as the clip on the cable connector could be broke or defective.
