Basic VPN Configuration / Documentation

Just bought a DIR-330, with a desire to use the VPN capability.

But... I am not a network guru, so many of the terms used in the web VPN configuration are unknown to me.  And... neither the DIR-330 PDF manual nor the "help" section of the web-app of the DIR-330 explain them.  For example, what are "Remote Local LAN Net / Mask", or "Local ID", or "Remote ID"?  Do they need to be filled in, or is leaving them blank okay?  Etc...    I saw a discussion in another post that seemed to suggest that it might be desirable/necessary to configure both an IPSEC and a PPTP/L2TP profile in order to achieve the connection... but it wasn't clear if that was the general case or if that was to address a specific set of circumstances.  Again... 'cuz I am a newbie with regard to VPN design/configuration.

Which leaves me experimenting all afternoon but not being able to establish a connection from my Windows XP machine, and with no expectation of being able to do so from my Linux machines.

So this is a request: can a reasonable tutorial with example settings be created?  Doesn't have to be complicated.  Even a "fill it in like this" with some short explanation to start would be a help.  Or can someone point to some literature where the configuration terms and design are explained so that folks who aren't network gurus (but aren't computer newbies) can work through it?

It sounds like you are going to want to go with a PPTP solution, since you have remote hosts connecting directly and didn't mention the software in use by them.

This is the FAQ for a PPTP server and Windows client.

It would be great to have this example in the latest version of formware 1.12. Version 1.12 does not have "local" Authentication and does not have usernames and passwords.

It does, it is under Advanced->User Groups, simply match the User Group in the PPTP server with the one you load with your credentials.
