Random Internet Disconnects
« on: February 19, 2012, 02:55:20 PM »

I am experiencing random disconnects from the internet -- they have been occurring about 1-3 times per day, although I've just had four in the last 20 minutes.

ISP: Wow! Cable - 15/1Mbps
Modem: Motorola SB6121 (new)
Router: D-Link DIR-655 (new) Firmware 2.00NA

When the internet disconnects:
- Both the LAN & the WAN are affected, but I do not lose any wireless connectivity with the router itself.
- I am able to log into the router wirelessly but cannot access the modem.
- If I plug my laptop directly into the modem, I can connect to the internet.
- When I reboot (using the on/off switch on the surge protector), everything comes back up.

There are a couple of other wireless routers nearby with fairly strong signals, but they appear to be running on different channels.

My phones are DECT 6.0, so there shouldn't be any interference problems with those.

I've been poking around this forum, and have already made some setting changes that seem to be consistently recommended:
- Ensured DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual
- Turned off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
- Turned off Advanced DNS Services
- Turned on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
- Ensured devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
- Using mixed G and N signal mode
- My security setting is WPA-Personal. WPA2-PSK

I don't know what to do next.  Any additional suggestions on troubleshooting, recommended settings I may be overlooking, etc. would be welcome!

Chk the modems logs for any connections problems. If your internet is going down and you can still connect to the router, might be an issue with the signal going to the modem. Check for additional t.v. Line splitters on the line w the modem. These can lower the signal going to the modem. Id ask the iSP of tue see anything on there side aswell.

Swap out cable btwn the modem and router. Cat6 is recommended.

The modem log makes no sense to me.  Here are the first few entries:

I've checked the modem log previously -- these seem to be the same entries that have been there since my ISP provisioned the modem on 2/10.  The clock is set correctly on the modem -- what's with all the 1970 entries?

I don't believe I'm losing my actual signal to the modem -- the status lights on the modem don't change (on the router, either, for that matter) -- and I can connect to the Internet if I plug directly into the modem.

There's only one 2-way splitter ahead of the modem.  The modem is getting 50% of the incoming signal -- all my TVs are sharing the rest.  All of the cables are new.

I feel like the modem and the router are conflicting with each other somehow.  Are there any other settings I can check?

I would test w out the splitter to see. I also have seen some of these dates on my SB modem. Something in the modem not getting updatd time for some reason. I would talk to the ISP and see if there is anything they can see. I have the 6121 modem and it werks well with the 655 router.
