Only pulling 30mbps?
« on: February 23, 2012, 05:35:08 PM »

I have Broadband 100 from Shaw Cablesystems (100mbps speed)
I can only pull 30mbps with the DIR-615. I have tried exchanging it for another one, same issue.
Is there some kind of configuration option I'm missing? This is absolutely rubbish :\
Bypassing router gives me full speed

Turn off Traffic Shaping and QoS

QoS is already disabled, no idea how to turn off Traffic Shaping.
Ah, they are one in the same.
Well, in that case, no go :\

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

Q. What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
A. Cisco DPC3825. Built in router but in bridge mode

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Done

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.

Done

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking

Done

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Done

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

Done

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

All I use is a HIPS and sandboxie, so there's nothing that could interfere here
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

I have a brand new CAT6 that is 2ft long, this is not the issue.

I have also tried two dedicated NICs and my onboard LAN chip, issue remains on all.

How long have you had this router for?
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

This is also the second one I had. I exchanged the first thinking it was faulty, turns out it's not.

Makes me think there is something else going on. These routers work well out of box unless something is effecting the connection between it and the modem.

I would try a different model router, I recommend a DIR-825, 655 or 657. These are solid routers and I have tested these.

One thing I would do if you can, take the router to a different location, family, friend or nieghbors place with internet and see if this problem is tracking or not. I bet it might not. If not, it might be a compatibility issue with the modem. I've seen only a few issues with Cisco modems. More with Arris. I prefer Motorola SB 6 Series modems.

If anything, take it back and try a different model router.

Let us know how it goes.

Problem is, my ISP (Shaw Cablesystems) is very restrictive. They have two options of cable modem, the DPC3825 or the SMC3DGN. The first has a decent built in router and can be put into bridge mode. Second has no bridge mode and an utter rubbish router.

I also have no money to buy a new router, but I'll probably just go with the ASUS RT-N16. $30 more for 10x the features, and it's ASUS, so at least I know I'll get what I'm paying for :)

I'll probably just turn the DIR-615 into a wireless adapter or some such with dd-wrt.

You could try loading WRT on the 615 and see if that does anything.
One thing you could try is the un-bridge the modem and use the DMZ if it has one and input the IP address the 615 gets from the modem. I'm thinking there is something going on between the modem and router.

LEt us know what you end up doing. I wish i could be more helpful.

Problem with bridging and unbridging the modem is that my ISP has to do it. Like most ISPs, their firmware severely cripples the device. For my ISP, that means disabling the ability to turn bridge mode on or off (god knows why). But yes, this seems likely to me. I don't understand why the DIR-615 would only be able to do 30mbps over wifi when it's capable of 300, let alone 54..

Well I've got it DMZ'd to the DIR-615, and I am still only pulling 30mbps.. also running dd-wrt (no going back, since the 615's dd-wrt overwrites redboot for some stupid reason)

Are you testing speeds over wired or wireless. Wireless is a different animal from wired and can't provide the same results and speed testing accuracy as wired does.

"Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11g and 802.11n specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors,
including volume of network traffic, building materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect
wireless signal range."

Both, actually.

Anyway, I got a refund on the DIR-615 and upgraded to the DIR-655. Issues solved.
I can see the DIR-615 being a really solid router for slower connections, but it just wasn't cutting it with mine :)
Thanks for all of the help!
