i looked everywhere but these forums when buying the 343 for home back up solutions.  so didnt see any drive size restrictions upon purchase

so i got two of the 3tb drives put in slots 1 and 2 and have been trying to format them in all configurations for most of the day.

These drives are straight from the box.  anything special i am overlooking to get these formatted for use?

or are 3tb drives beyond the 343 capabilities?

<i saw the sticky on compatible drives but it seemed out of date>

also upgraded to 1.4 firmware hoping that would help

any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the largest HDD the DNS-343 will support is 2TB.  The DNS-343 is unable to handle the advanced addressing schema used by HDDs larger than 2TB.

Im back home after exchanging for the 2tb versions.  (and getting money back)

So far much better.

initializing went to 100%

will wait and see how the formatting of the volumes go...4% complete and increasing

i cant get any of the drives to format.  

JavaLawyer, do you have any suggestions? what firmware are you using for your 2tb drives?

in the meantime i am rebooting device and trying standalone drive formats with most stable setting.

Firmware 1.05b is the only version supporting advanced format HDDs. Configuring all four HDDs as Standard Volumes is the least complex and least problematic of all HDD configurations on the DNS-343.

I still have not had a successful format.

is there any logging to see whats happening?

very frustrating...usually i know its a failure when the interface doesnt match the gui data.

Yea..from the get go that has been my preference.

i have tried switching the drives around in different order..also picked up two more 2tb drives..(model st2000dm001 if that helps anyone) to see if i had worst luck in the world.

they just hung again at 8% formatting.

tried ssh and telnet to root but connections are refused.  thought maybe i could run some format commands in root.

sighh.   guess i need to decide to keep or box up soon

From what you describe, my only thought at this point is that there is a compatibility issue with the HDDs you are using. Here are two posts with HDDs tested by either D-Link and users:

i was able to get them formatted raid 1 (just trying everything) but in degraded status

then later that day it lost drive 2.

question about the fans on the back.  should i feel at least the slightest breeze coming out?  wondering if drives keep over heating then my failures happen.

You should hear the fans spool up and down.  Additionally, if you log into the Web Interface and select the "STATUS" link, you can see the temperature of each HDD.

Have you been trying to format both HDDs at the same time for each attempt? You may want to try formatting as Standard Volumes serially. Perhaps one of the HDDs is defective, which is typically the reason why a RAID-1 would show as degraded.
