My DGL-4500 always needs resetting
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:02:07 PM »

Once or twice a day, my DGL-4500 randomly stops working and needs resetting. It's a huge nuisance for me and my family and I'm not sure how to fix it. Please help me figure out why this is happening and how I can fix it. I've had the router for less than a year and my current firmware version is "1.21NA, 2009/07/09".

Update to v1.23 using the FW update sticky process. Let us know how it goes.

Here is what i found. Take a look at your wireless security settings. If i set my router to WPA2 (AES) my router has minimal errors and packet drops. the only issue is that if i use this setting all of my 80211n devises only run on "G" mode. what i have done to try to resolve or at least minimize the manual resets is to set the WPA/WPA2 settings to auto and manually set "G" devises to WPA (AES) and let the router set the "N" devises automatically. I do have errors and packet drops but i have not reset my router in two days of heavy gaming and netflix watching! By the way, I am running firmware 1.23na on a ver1 dgl4500. Hope this helps.

N mode only supports AES only. TPIK isn't supported on N mode.
If using Mixed G and N then use Auto TPIK and AES.

Using auto Auto TPIK and AES gave the worst issues. I had to reset constantly. My router is very tempermental. I thought WPA2 only supports AES? If this is the case why does my router not recognize my "N" devises?

You sure the N devices are supporting of the N or the AES encryption?
Do the devices connect at single mode N with AES only, if not then maybe your devices don't support N and AES only.

I would check with the properties of some wireless adapters and make sure the N mode is enabled too. I have see where this option was not enabled on some wireless adapters thus making the adapter only connect at G mode.

Test with N mode only with out any encryption as well and this will also let you know if your devices are N supporting or not.

i have two iphone 4s and a new vizio wireless n LCD. WPA2 does not recognize my n devises. I'll take your advise and set the router to n only and take it from there.

Are you using WPA2 AES only?

Yes. Also, are you using 20/40Mhz or just 20? Try 20 Only.

Try 20 only as well.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I Did turn off all these settings and only using 20mhz now. I do see that there are about four other routers in the area. I guess thats why i am having errors and packet drops again. I hope i don't have to start reseting again. Worst Case i'll have to revert back to my old settings. I'll have to monitor the statistics a bit more.

Find a open channel thats not being used by any of the other wifi routers. Set a manual channel to that.

I have my router set to auto search for the best channel. It actually is set to a channel that is not being used by anyone else according to InSSIDer.
