Dns server isn't responding
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:28:28 PM »

I get the message "dns server isn't responding" several times per day. If i get the message, nothing can get through to the internet (smartphones, laptop, vita, friends smartphones, etc.)
If i reset the router, i can access the web again. Or if i wait for 2 minutes.

This is my setup:

Cable modem connects to D-link 615. Laptop is connected with a cable in D-link 615. All my wireless stuff is connected via wireless D-link 615.
My cable modem is also connected directly to my ps3.
I'm running windows 7 on my laptop.
I've search for a solution, but couldn't find it anywhere. This is my last resort ;)

I've just noticed that when i pull out the lan cable and plug it back in; i'm directly connecting to internet again. But this is a work around. I need something solid.
The thing is, everything behind the Dir615 isnt working when this happens. But my ps3 is still online...

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Check
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
No such option
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Box was already checked
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Done
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
No such option under that tab.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
Check

There is no such thing as H/W V1, maybe H1.
Try to upgrade the F/W to v8.02. It solves many problems.

I did the 8.01 official update, the latest according to d-link. (Can you confirm that 8.02 works for Dir615?)
Yesterday i had no disconnects at all, today is already one big disconnection...

And indeed, i apologize, it's indeed H1.

I recommend only using posted and released FW updates for your router for your region.

DIR-615 Hx

As a test, turn off WiFi and run just wired and let us know if you see any disconnection with the router?

I would swap out cables between the MODEM and router. I would recommend checking out a SB 6121 modem if available in your region.

I turned off wifi, but the problem still exists. Strange thing is, during "disconnections" Skype will stil work.

I just talked at the phone with some guy from D-Link Support and he ensured that FW v8.02 is for the whole Europe (Belgium included). Only firmwares with "NA" (North-America), "EU" (Europe) etc. are for specific regions. So you are SAFE to upgrade to v8.02 and test the functionality afterwards.

I would check the ISP Modem and ISP Modem connection first before upgrading FW.
Have the ISP check signal levels going into the ISP modem. I would also ask for a Modem upgrade. 5Series modems are fairly generic and run OK however have seen some issues with them. I recommend getting a Motorla SB 6121 modem. Great modems if they are available in your region.

Check all cables between modem and router too, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

I would recommend trying the released 8.01 FW first before going to 8.02. Use the FW update process outlined in the sticky in this forum.

Keep us posted.
