Loosing connection when I connect LAN cable
« on: February 28, 2012, 01:05:37 AM »

Hi all.

I just bought my DCS-932L yesterday, went home and followed the instructions on how to connect it and use the installation wizard etc. But it was not able to connect to the internet. I then realized I had lost internet connection.
I unplugged all, restarted my router got internet back..tried same again and voila...I had lost connection again.
I experienced a bit and found out that the second I plugged in the LAN cable to the camera...bump...I lost connection !?!?!
I tried continue the installation without the internet connection, but was no use.
Anyone have a solution/suggestion on how I solve this.

Sorry, I am not a computer geek, so hope it can be explained in understandable ways.  :D

(I do not have a fixed IP....should I get that ?)

Please make sure you are (1) not disconnecting the network cable connecting your router to your modem and (2) not disconnecting the network cable connecting your router to your PC. Disconnecting either of these two cables will cause you to lose Internet access.

1.  I have tried the cable that came with the camera and the one to my NAS which I know works. Its not the cable.

2. I have 2 computers which are connected to the router. When I plug the camera into the router...the connections drops and I have to restart router to get connection back (after I unplug camera).

(when I use my windows 7 to diagnostice the connection problem, it usually talks about false IP..which is why I wonder if I need static IP ?)

Do you have a router in between the ISP modem and devices or are you connecting everything up to the ISP Modem?

Everything  is connected directly to this router/modem. I think it has everything in one.

Just to clarify  :)

The cable from the wall is a special cable that only fits into the router/modem provided by my ISP.
This router/modem splits the signal my two computers which both are connected by LAN cable.
I have a NAS as well which is connected.

I have tried switching the ports, cables etc arround. No problem there.

When the secon the cable from camera is plugged in...the connection to the internet drops instantly on all machines (and router starts trying to reset I think ?) Only way to get internet back is to unplug the camera cable and turn off router/modem-thing...wait a while, turn it on and "diagnostic problem" in windows where it will then reestablish connection.

Note is....while camera is plugged into router/modem (and the internet is off) I am able to see the camera from the other machines (so its correct connected to the local area network but has a problem with the internet).

I have been reading on other forums as well in search for answers. I can see other suggests that the mac adress can be a problem if my ISP has something...uhmm special set for it (this is where my knowledge comes to an enc, sorry  ;))

No, not yet. Wanted to see if I could solve it myself (with help from the internet) before I called them (not sure there is anyone to call in Denmark btw?)  ???

I think the Thompson is a cable modem:
Thomson TWG870TS Is this your modem link?
I have seen a few issues with this modems. And there not very user friendly either.

I might see if you can add either a network switch to the modem or maybe try adding a external router and put the external routers IP address in to the modems DMZ if it has one.

Your bound my the modem and to use the modem if it provides you with Phone and other services besides internet. There also could be some settings on the ISP modem that could effect better usage of connected devices. I would contact the Mfr of the modem or the ISP and see if there are any specific settings that this modem might have, i.e. QoS, DMZ and such. Most ISP Modems are generic and don't offer extra features like external routers and are not at good either.

Yes, that looks like the modem I use.

I will contact the ISP and see if they have a solution.

I am not sure I completely understand the thing you say by en external router.

I have a Belkin N Vision I think its called (the one I had before they told me to use their Thomson). Can I connect that to the Thomson and get acces through the Belkin? Is that what you suggest ?

Yes, Would look like this:
ISP Modem/Router>external router><wired and wireless devices connected to the external router.

Again, this may or may not work. DMZ is needed for the external router if the ISP modem has this option.

Time for an update.

After trying adding an extra router after the Thomson router/modem, I was able to connect the LAN cable to camera without loosing connection.
Tried an installation where I wanted to make an MyDLink account as well. But. My camera now works...but it was not able to establish connection to the internet and thereby not able to create an MyID Account.

So...can still not use the camera as intented.
Suggestions on how I get acces to internet ?

(I have tried with a direct LAN to Thomson as well....that works too now !?! which is good, but still no connection to the internet.)
