Simple Question
« on: March 14, 2009, 09:49:03 AM »

I have the 321 plugged in to my wireless router, which happens to be in a different room from my PC.  Consequently, my PC is attached to the router on a wireless (N) connection.  I am trying to move some large media files to the DNS-321 from my PC.  I would like to just plug it in to the lan port on my PC since I have had errors/problems, likely related to the wireless network connection, moving large files.

What are the settings required on the 321 and PC to accomplish this?  (I have a cross-over cable if this is necessary.)

Also... Are there settings on the 321 that would make moving large files over my wireless connection more reliable?  Speed is less an issue than moving the files reliably.

You will need to set static ip addresses on both the DNS-321 and the PC, a cross-over cable will work, but is not required - the gigabit port on the DNS-321 will "auto cross" if necessary.

No there are no settings on the DNS-321 that would make moving large files over wireless more reliable, you would probably need to tackle this from a wireless perspective - if your wireless card utilities show statistics take a look at the tx & rx error rates, you will probably find one of them to be fairly high, and will need to determine the cause and correct it.

Please note - if you are using an Intel PRO/Wireless card - these have a power saving feature known as PSP or power save polling that is not commonly used with consumer wireless routers and can cause problems of this nature - there is a work around on the Intel website for it.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Thanks.  I thought I tried that, but must have done something wrong the first time.  Seems to be working just fine now!  Thanks again.
