help with dir645 and 5 dwl-2100ap setup for wifi coverage
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:07:39 AM »

Hi guys, looking for some advice on fixing the setup for 5 of these dlink access points throughout my family's business. There's already ethernet run out from my DIR645 hooked up to my main Telus modem(all-in-one router Actiontec V1000H) to the 5 spots where I would want to hookup the dwl-2100aps so that I can provide wireless in those areas. They were setup 5-6 years ago by someone else but it seems it doesn't work anymore so I want to reset and reconfigure them. Plus they were initially setup so they all had different SSID (like TL1, TL2m TL3 etc) but I want to simplify to one shared SSID with just basic password if that's possible. I'm okay at configuring my one home wrt610nv2 and client bridge to wrt310n but these dlink at the business are messing me up!

I checked the manual but it's pretty confusing for a novice like me, there are 5 different modes:
a Wireless Access Point; a Wireless Client; a Wireless Bridge; a Multi-Point Bridge; or a Repeater.

which mode (Just wireless access point?)and what setup to make best wireless coverage? You can see what options are available on this emulator site from dlink. Running 2.11 firmware, doesn't look like much benefit to upgrade that. http://support.dlink.com/emulators/dwl2100ap/210/HomeWizard.html

Or if you gurus have any suggestion for me to replace or augment those with some other access points?

thanks in advance for any advice!

I would bridge the Actiontec Modem first off.
You can review this: Turning a router into an AP.

I you should be able to use the DWLs all on the same SSID and PWs, just need to make sure the channels are set manually and to different channels. If you have repeater mode, I might set 1 or 2 up as repeaters and the others as APs. Kind of open on how to set all that up.

hey furry, thanks for the advice, i will try that out.  just wanted to ask if the different channels with the same ssid, can they be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5?  or is there overlap in the channels so I have to space them apart?  asking because I have 5 of those dwl-2100aps.

I looked through the web interface of the ap's and it seems pretty barebones, hope that works.

Do you suggest I keep the dir-645 actiontec or just use the actiontec since it's supposed to be all-in-one modem and router?

thanks,
Ray

I recommend keeping the 645 and turn off all the features of the actiontec.

If you have 5 then try one at 1, 3, 6, 8 or 9, then 11 and see if that works on the APs. Member yoru 645 need a channel too. Not sure if having all 5 AP online will work smoothly. Never seen this kind of set up before.

Maybe I should do 2 aps with same ssid and then new ssid for the other three?

I can't get the Guest Zone wireless to work for internet access.  The 645 router's regular wireless works fine.

I've tried checking and unchecking the "Enable Routing between Zones" option in Guest Zone options.   any suggestions?

Should work, just enable, set PW and go. You sure you are connecting to the GZ SSID? Try testing with out a PW first and see if you get any Internet.
What FW is loaded on the 645?
