DGL-4500 FW1.23NA - Constantly Dropping Network Traffic
« on: March 09, 2012, 03:02:56 PM »

Hey all, I'm hoping that you might be able to help me. I'm have a problem where my network traffic seems to drop off and on constantly. I've got pings going out to my modem, ISP DNS server, the router itself and google. At first I thought it was my ISP but now I'm thinking its the router. Atleast every 30 seconds I get "Request timed out" on all of my pings showing the network drop across the board. I was running FW 1.15 so I decided to update to the latest FW 1.23NA and did a factory reset so all settings were defaulted. Still the same issue so now I'm not sure where to look next. When I connect my PC directly to the modem, I don't have any of the problems. My pc's are all directly connected during these tests.

Has anyone seen this before or have idea where to look next? I've had this router for atleast 2 years and I've never had a single problem with it and I love it.

ISP: COX Norther VA
Modem: Linksys BEFCMU10

Let me know if you need any additional information. Thanks in advance!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router when this happens? Both?

Some things to try:
I recommend trying ISP DNS IP addresses first while testing.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
I recommend getting a Motorola SB 6121 cable modem.

Thanks for the tips FurryNutz. I unplugged the other 3 connections and left just my main PC connected and it seemed to stop. I reconnected the other PCs and still no problem. I'll keep monitoring it cause I have no idea what it was.
