Zero internet access DIR-651
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:34:02 PM »

First post...hm.

Just purchased a D-Link DIR-651 today. Popped in the Setup CD, ran the setup. During the setup, it told me it couldn't find my internet connection, which struck me as odd, but I continued with it. I have a DSL connection and I'm pretty sure I use Dynamic IP. I have a username and password that are stored in the modem and I never have to enter it to get online. My connection is up with my old router and that's how I'm posting right now, but on the 651, it doesn't give me internet access. I've tried different cables, I've ran the setup 100000000 times, yet to no avail.

Is there some sort of setting I need to change or something that I'm missing?

I would set up the router using Setup/Internet/Manual

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Tried all of that, and rebooted the router afterwards. Still nothing. The modem is standalone. I've had no luck over 3 hours trying to make it work. I've got to be missing something though...

Did you power off both modem and router then power on the modem and let it sync then power on the router?
How are you connected to the router? wired or wireless?
Is the router getting an IP address under Status/Device Info/Wan section?

Swap out the cable between the modem and router. CAT 6 is recommended. Sometimes the cable that comes in the box isn't the best made.

Done and done. Still nothing.

For what it's worth...

Hardware Version: A2     Firmware Version: 1.10NA

This is the latest firmware, and I even tried reuploading it over the existing 1.10NA thinking maybe there was just an error in it. Nope.

No. It shows 0.0.0.0.

However, the ethernet light on my modem lights up and the internet light on the modem glows amber.

Think there is an issue with the modem side. I might unbridge the modem and then see if the modem is a DMZ and input the IP address the 651 router gets from the modem and put that into the DMZ.

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Are you sure the ISP modem is bridged?
I would call the ISP and ask to make sure. They might help you get it bridged.
Once this is done, you'll need to input the user name and password into the Routers PPPoE section under Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection Type. Select Always ON. Save the setting and power off modem and router and power them back on. It should connect.

If the modem is bridged, you can try the following:
Factory reset the modem back to defaults. You'll need to set up the user name and password so it will connect to the ISP. Connect your PC to the modem first to do this. If you can get internet after that. Power OFF the modem and router and PC. Reconnect the router to the modem and the PC to the router. Power ON the modem and let it sync. Then power ON the router and let it sync. I might factory reset the router at this step too to make sure it's back to defaults. Power ON the pc and connect to the router and check to see if it has an IP address under Status/Device Info/Wan section. It should have a 192.168 address. Put this Address into the modems DMZ if it has one.

Seems that the 651 just isn't getting an IP address from the modem so the modem isn't setup right. IF your getting the web page on the router, then the router is working on the LAN side. Just need to get signal from the modem to the WAN side on the router.

Tried all of that. Reset the modem to factory, shut it all down, started it up modem, router, pc. And it's still the same. It did say in the system logs in the modem that it was in bridge mode or something. But I'm still stuck in the same spot as before.

I tried setting up a static IP on the router with the address that shows up when I post here, because it seemed to be consistent every time I rebooted the modem. With the gateway, I wasn't sure what to use because it wouldn't let me use the IP i have to use to access the modem. Then I didn't know what to put in for DNS so I'd assume I have to call my ISP for those. It put me one step closer, though...the amber internet light changed to green. :) still wouldn't let me access anything though.
