Could we get some help(lotta help:-)) on our network ?
« on: March 19, 2012, 01:15:39 AM »

We have spent alot of time getting to this point, we are both uh older people..lol weel past SS time, but
we wanted our house and the guest house to have internet service, at first we bought 3 DIR615's, but
after reading post after post we googled, we decided to use 2 DIR825's and 2 DIR615, our ISP provided
a DIR615 with their modem and that was the orginal reason to use them. But the DIR825 seemed to
answer the problem of distance between our houses since we could change to bigger directional antennas. We now have all the hardware, but figuring out what should be configured is really complicated to us, we have spent much time reading, but we don't want to have to run between the
houses changing stuff, if we needed to. I'am pretty much confined to the house with a respiratory
illness and my better half is great in the kitchen..lol and loves to help elsewhere, but I know we need
some assistance in understanding all this new stuff, we may have learned just enough to get in trouble.
But anyway let me see if my architecture dribblings can help..

Thanks a bunch  Mona & Michael

This is what our setup looks like at this url:

This is what the current DIR615 AP is configured at

http://s19.postimage.org/ev75jdoz7/All_router_info_complete_std_size.png

This is what we are trying to configure

We need to setup the routers in the following manner;

R1(turtle)  is the internet AP and can't be updated

R2(turtle2) is a directional antenna wireless bridge to R3(turtle3)
............and is connected to R1(turtle) via cat5
____________
************NOTE (#1) ****** for R2(turtle) & R3(turtle3) *******

............We would like for R2 & R3 not to broadcast themselves
............and/or be visable wirelessly.
............We realize that in order for R2(turtle2) and R3(turtle3)
............to communicate they must allow each to accept wireless
............signals, but only with each other via IP Mask or submask.
............If we need to connect to any router we can plug a cable
............into either R1,R2,R3 or R4 and access them based upon
........... their unique IP address/submask or their unique name.

R3(turtle3) is a directional antenna wireless bridge to R2(turtle2)
____________
************ See NOTE (#1) ***************************************

R4(turtle4) is a repeater/AP for R1(turtle).
is connected to R3(turtle3) via cat5

............We hope R4(turtle4) will only repeat the R1(turtle) signal?

............we don't want R2,R3 and r4 to have wireless hookups to
............their SSID names.

Wow.  :o
Any chance of having a on site advisor or consultant come to your place.
I'm not to sure if we can provide any assistance from here as this seems like a fairly big endeavor and needs hands on access and is somewhat beyond the scope of support here.

What region are you located?
How big is the main house and guest house?
You might want to simplify this and possibly use just the host router and a actual relay or extender devices in stead of having numerous routers which the routers are not designed to do.
You also might want to make it simple by running a CAT6 shielded and plenumed cable from the main house to the guest house and then install a DAP model AP. Something like a 1360, 1522, or 1525. Or you could use one of the 615s turned into an AP. Cat6 can go about 300ft I believe if not more. I have one buried at my place.

I would highly recommend getting an on site computer tech person who deals in networking and cabling to help you out. I wish I could as I know how to do this.  ::)

Thanks Furrynutz,

We live in florida, but there is a pool, as well as cement walkways, and Patio floors
that pretty much prevent an underground cable between here and there. That was
the main reason in searching out an alternate solution. From all the posts we've been
thru, there are several other ways using our equipment with third party firmware
suppliers. Which we have been reading their posts as well as the Dlink forums.
Besides at our age the past months has been interesting, if not somewhat
frustrating at times, but none the less something to build and learn about.
Thanks anyway, we will get it figured out ..:-)
