DNS problem with Vista on a Secured Connection.
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:56:44 AM »

Hi,

I had no problem setting up my new DIR-645.  It works great, range is excellent.  Two android phones and a Nook connect easily to a the secured (WPA-2) connection.  My desktop Vista with a wired connection is also just fine.  But two Vista laptops will only work on an unsecured guest connection.  They will connect to the secured account but shows only a connection to the network not the internet.  Any webpage fails to load with a DNS error.  I tried ipconfig / flush dns, but that did not help.

Ideas?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

OK, here goes:
HW Ver.: A1, FW Ver.: 1.01 Fri 08 Jul 2011
Utah, USA
ISP is Comcast cable through a Arris TM402PNA-1 cable modem (no router). It's never been a problem connected to previous wireless routers.
Tried all your suggestions, no change.

To reiterate:
Wired PC fine
Secured wireless (WPA2 AES) to two Android phones and a Nook works just fine
Two Vista laptops only work properly with the unsecured guest account.  They connect to the WPA2 but browser errors suggest they can't see DNS even though ipconfig shows a DNS ip address.  So it looks like something stupid in Vista but  I didn't have this problem with a previous Belkin or Linksys router.

Thanks for your help.

Are the WiFi drivers up to date?
What wireless security modes do they support?
Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

What WiFi model and brand are installed?

You got it - updating the driver made the difference.  I hadn't considered that since the original driver worked with Belkin and Lynksys.  But it's all good now.  Thanks for your help FurryNutz!
