Can't set up Dir-655 Router (new)
« on: March 21, 2012, 01:10:30 AM »

I bought a new Dir-655 router and i'm having trouble setting the router up.

The easy set up disc doesn't work as it gets stuck on "Waiting for router".

Then i tried to set up directly without the router with the ethernet wire between the modem and dir-655. So i try connecting wireless to the router and set it up through the ip address of the router. But that hangs when it finished and pressing "connect".

So that didn't work so when connecting to the router, windows 7 tried to help me set it up through the router's pin and setting up password. But when that finished, it sort of worked. The internet connected but it was dodgy and slow and it cut out eventually.

How do i actually set up this router???

Can you log in at  192.168.0.1 with a wired PC and set it up from there?
You can set it up manually.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

When I try to set it up manually, it's connected wirelessly.  Would that still work?

I'm in Australia the router doesn't find my ISP. I have ADSL 2+, stand-alone modem.

Also, what would the DNS be?

Yes you can connect to the router wirelessly as well.

I would contact your ISP and have them make sure you can connect a router to the modem. It should work. Every ISP can be different.

DNS should be what ever is getting passed from the ISP modem. You'll need to ask the ISP what your proper DNS is.

The modem is compatible with routers. I"m replacing it with the Dir-655. There's so many problems when trying to set it up.

When I try setting it up manually, wired it doesn't work because the wireless router is on and emits the signal. When I try to connect it wirelessly, my computer says "cannot connect to D-Link" but I ignore that and type in "192.168.x.x" which it goes to the Dlink page.

I try the automated set up of the router which it then does successfully, but when on the last step and clicking "connect" the router reboots and then the page disappears and my computer disconnects from it and it just hangs. Set up fails there unless something else is supposed to be done.
