guests using DIR-651
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:18:32 AM »

Hello,

I had a guest with a wireless device at the house this weekend.  They wanted to connect to my wireless service.  I gave them my password, but they could not connect.  Why not?.  How do I correct this so guests may use their laptops and other devices?

Is the Guest services enabled on the router? Under Advanced/Guest Zone if you have this option?

The guest services may not be enabled.  How do I get to this option?

In case you haven't guessed by now, I'm not very good at these electronic problems  :)

Log into the router at 192.169.0.1 in a browser and go to Advanced/Guest Zone.

I went to my browser and entered 192.169.0.1 where I would put a web address such as this forum address.  It searches for a while, but does not connect.  Am I doing this correctly?

Is your PC wired to the back of the 651 on one of the LAN ports? Try this first.
Don't use www. in front of that IP address.

Is the PCs networking properties set up for automatic or auto obtain IP addressing?
Is the PC getting an IP address from the router? Should be a 192.168.0.something address.

Swap out the cable between the router and PC to ensure cable is good.

I have been searching Windows 7 for networking propertys and can't find them.  Where would one look for an IP address?

Network and Sharing Center/Change Adapter Settings/right click on the network icon/Properties/InternetProtocolVersion4/Properties/Obtain an IP address should be selected for both.

Then you should be getting an IP address on the PC and should be able to connect to the routers web page.
Whats listed under Network and Sharing Center/Change Adapter Settings/right click on the network icon/Status/Details?
There should be a IP, Subnet Mask and default Gateway addresses listed here. The gateway is the routers IP address.

Well, I did find the default gateway and it is 92.168.0.1.  I tried it again and it worked  :).  I don't know why it didn't work all the other times I tried.  I changed the guest provision.  I will have to see if the D-Link Guest shows up on a guests wireless device as my laptop only shows the wireless name it connects to.

Thank you for all of your help,
Jim
